Remember phoning my Dad the following morning from a payphone about something and he told me the news / was astonished.
    Douglas was superb that night.
Tyson abused his immense talent to an extreme point of self loathing/self destructive behaviour, which caught up with him that night.
Tyson himself says he was never particularly the 'same' after that fight.
Sadly most of the rest of his career became a freak show.Never liked the guy,but an astonishing talent.
Buster D's mental approach deserves alot of credit that night.

That version of Douglas wouldn't have been toyed with by anyone. Mind you I'm not implying that he would've beaten all the other greats...not by a long shot. But a man 220-230 lbs, 6'4" with a long reach, good movement and a potent jab along with a good right hand wouldn't be a walk in the park for anyone. Foreman didn't steamroll Ali or Young and Douglas on that night fought like a big man who had good stamina and could box. For that one night he caught lightning in a bottle and fought to his potential. After that....

:dealYes, that got to me...capping off an UNBELIEVABLE night....the boxing experience of a lifetime....the greatest upset in the history of sports....not just boxing. Buster, on that night alone,...was an inspiration for anyone and everyone. To come up against the mountain, against almost hopeless odds, just say "**** it", and go out there and get the ******* done!! Buster had nothing to lose, much heartache behind him, harnessed all the forces he had together and did the impossible.

Nonsense man, and you know it. This detracts just about from everything you've ever said that was worthwhile in the forum.

That version of Buster Douglas would have had a shot at any heavyweight champion of history....never mind how he let it all get away from him after that.

And that tops my supposed nonsense by a country mile, I can name at least 10 heavyweights that would have beaten Douglas on that same night....

I couldn't believe the guy who quit against tucker had any real chance. Tyson in any shape still seemed too good for everyone.
It was the first fight sky tv had I think and the first Tyson fight I didn't stay up to watch or record. the next day I was only concerned with what round Tyson had ko'd him.......cue jaw-drop when I found out. It didn't seem real. I wonder what Holyfield thought as he watched his mega-fight go down the pan?

I don't think this thread is about trying to name HW champs who would beat James B Douglas, it's about giving him praise and remembering an outstanding achievement that truely came out of the blue.

bradford city came from 2 goals down to put chelsea out of the fa cup within the last month.(a top 10 in the world team vs outside top 50 of just british teams) So no, there was a bigger shock within the last month of sports, let alone the preceding 200+ months. Biggest shock in hw history might be true though.

the biggest shock in the last 25 years of sport imo would be oscar pereiro winning the tour de france, but i don't know every sport.

It baffles me how a fighter can be a 42-1 underdog in a 2 horse race.....

    There was a reason.

Only one hotel (The Mirage) offered odds. As the only thing people used to bet on Tyson wise then was the Under/Over.

Anyway a client wanted to put a serious amount on Tyson, the hotel agreed to take it, thus opened the book, and to try and balance things eventually offered 42/1 on Douglas. Apparently nobody took them up on the offer, even at them odds!

I bet the bookmakers were rubbing their hands on that night.
