Dempsey and tyson -both swarmers with lethal left hooks and body shots -both on the short side and relied on upperbody movement, dipping, and pivotin to unleash powerful bombs -both born the same month -both grew up in poverty, got into brawls, and dropped out of school. -both won the title at a very young age. -both were known for intense glares, stare downs, and intimidation -both were the most popular athletes in the world and sold out stadiums -both blitzed their opponents at the opening bell and had a reputation for being seemingly unstoppable in the early rounds and then slowed down after the middle rounds. -both took a long layoff and were never quite the same after -both had a controversial fight with a skilled fighter that involved rumors of a "long count" (douglass, tunney). They both knocked down their opponent but then get knocked down in return. They also both lost these fights despite the betting odds. They both had ring rust. -you could also draw a parallel between tunney and holyfield: both moved up in weight (light heavy, cruiser), both lacked in punching power but had great skill. Both were considered underdogs against tyson and dempsey. They fought their respective opponents twice and won both, with the second fight ending in major controversey. Just a coincidence?
They were similar in style. Very different body types though. Dempsey was taller, lighter with long arms and faster/lighter on feet in his prime. Tyson was heavier, more compact, lower centre of gravity.
Difference was however Dempsey had the fighting heart of an ATG. Tyson was intrinsically a very fragile fighter.
Agreed Tyson was like other protege's in that they never mentally matured and and usually means they were easily manipulated and usually end up broke like other boxing prodigy's like Benitez and Morris East.
It's a lot easier to have "fighting heart" when facing guys like Carpentier and Miske. A little bit different story when facing Douglas or Holyfield. The true difference is that one of them drew the color line.
No silly Seamus AMERICA drew the color line. Color line was a cultural phenomenon. Learn history. Don't make it up.
This post reminded of a story I read many years ago when tyson was ready to meet spinks. Two guys sat in a bar watching tyson fight on the TV, the much younger man turned to the other and said '' remind s you of marciano fighting old timer ""?. So the old man Shook his head and said" "nah, that kid reminds me of Jack dempsey, way he moves and everything "". It's stuck in my mind ever since, and I'm sure the young tyson was trying to emulate dempsey so much when he was starting out. Tyson would have been flattered to hear the old man saying that.
July 8, 1919... "Jack Dempsey, new heavyweight champion of the world, has announced that he will not make a match with a negro. He therefore has barred Harry Wills from a fight for the title." Learn to have a source and stop make excuses for your heroes.
What you just wrote was what was expected of every hwt champion. Again it was a cultural bias not a Dempsey or Jeffries bias. If you were truely intent upon posting facts instead of the utter garbage you post in a weird attemp to incite and get your rocks off you would also write that each time Dempsey made these pronouncements they were almost immediately rescinded.
