Dempsey viciousness was probably a product of his life of hunger. He began as a professional while being a struggling hobo worker. He fought desperately to feed himself. His motivations were more material than Tyson's.

Similar to Schmeling v Louis, yes I agree.

I think Rahman v Lewis was a lesser victory though.

Totally incorrect. It wasn't the whole of America who felt that way first of all, and second, even if the majority felt a certain way, that didn't mean you were required to go along with it. Many people didn't. Often people who transcend time, are people that stood up for what is right, not the sheep.

I'm not knocking Dempsey for cashing in and doing what he had the chance to do. Fair play to him.

But, just because he did what everybody else did, that does not mean that he should have the status of 'ATG fighting heart' bestowed on him. By going into movies, he wasn't necessarily ducking anyone but nor was he doing the kind of work that you would expect of someone with his lasting reputation.

If Holyfield had fought five times in seven years because he was doing nike commercials, I wouldn't have blamed him but it would be a factor that would give me pause for thought in bestowing the ATG fighting heart status on him that I do. I credit him with that because he spent a long time irrefutably proving it in the ring.

What 'huge mistake' am I making here? I just don't see it.

The scientific community in America we're basically claiming proof of inferiority of people with black skin.

The government disallowed certain rights to black people, and oppressed them systemically. And they were made fun of and demeaned in the media.

If you single out Jeffries, you lack empathy, and understanding of the power of influence from the outside world.

Today, passing a homeless person on the street is normalized.
Perhaps in 100 years, when resources are no longer scarce, and society has advanced even further, they will think people from the past like us were just heartless selfish *******s for not battling poverty harder.

    I like this.
Although it has been argued for almost a century that total resources are already no longer scarce and the problem is global capitalism is ill-fit to advance us towards the elimination of poverty.

It doesn't work though, as people should look at that many years down the road as an issue. The same with global capitalism i.e. "keeping up with the Joneses" or the "American Dream".. These are things that people a 100 years from now should look back on us, and go, WTF were you people doing then. We aren't doing enough, and haven't been doing enough. Why shouldn't they look back on us like that? They should. Just as we should look back on Jeffries, and go, you could've done more and should've done more. It's really that simple

    Yeah, you're right.
How can anyone be held responsible for anything if we can't make judgements on individuals ?
Jeffries had obviously reached a position of enough importance to make statements, one way or another. And the statements he made leave a lot to be desired, to put it mildly.

Mike Tyson grew up in Scarsdale, NY, was a member of Bushwood Country Club and matriculated from Harvard, having spent all 4 years in Glee Club and as cox in crew.

    True story.

    Don't be silly.

We know the house he lived in with Camille Ewald and Cus D'amato. We know Bill Cayton and Jim Jacobs had money.
Yes, he was adopted by rich white folks in a nice little town and given everything he needed to succeed as a boxer.

    True story.
