Check out this video from 4:30.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnRDdmKIVh4&feature=related[/ame]

Tyson says he does "nothing like this at all" whilst watching a video of Frank Bruno lift weights. Earlier in the video Carpenter asks Tyson, "you don't do this sort of thing do you, training with weights?" "No, I don't".

So Tyson seems to be have been training minimally with weights at this point in his career, if at all. Did this change? If so, how so? I've never seen footage of Tyson training weights, does anybody have a link to some? What do you guys make of this? PowerPuncher, when you read this...:hey

Secondly, what do you guys make of Mike's reaction to being presented with footage of Bruno? Go back to 2:25 of that video - see Tyson's reaction from the start. He definitely looks uncomfortable to me - anyone else think so, any thoughts?

The "unknockoutable" reference in the thread title refers to a magazine article years and years ago. The article was printed in late 1989/early 1990 (ironically) and it presented a whole pile of pseudo science as to why, his low centre of balance, pre-natural balance, MAD THICK NECK etc. The problem is I can't remember what the article was printed in. Anyway, loads of Tyson freaks report to these boards (worse things to be) and whenever I start a thread on Mike I ask if anyone has this article or if they remember reading it. It was interesting.

Tyson was the last of the old school heavyweight champions.

i noticed that to and to be honest, i think it was more discomfort at being put on the spot and having to validate the belief that bruno was a true threat to him at that point and he was interested in fighting him. he was put in a tough position where it would have been disrespectful to just say bruno was a decent contender but not in his sights

oh i've seen footage of him doing neck exercises with weights later in his career and working out with weights a bit around the lewis fight but that was WAY later in his career

Around 1:15 - 1:30 of this video he's doing some squats and pressing a barbell.

I think he seemed more uncomfortable watching Frank lift, by the way.

That's how I saw it too. I think he really really liked Carpenter but didn't appreciate having Bruno stuffed down his throat and that's why the body language/first sign of sulliness.

Excellent ESB never lets you down, does it?

Now, any idea what fight he is training for there, or a year? That's a big ask, any ideas anyone?

Its worth watching it all, thanks for posting. Tyson did do weight exercises, because dips/chins are weights, they are just bodyweight instead of barbell weights. The weight exercises Bruno was doing from what I can see are not the best for boxing, as they aren't explosive, don't develop balance and aren't multi-joint. Tyson himself did allot of weight training in his comeback and we all remember the story of him benching 275lbs as a 13yo so its probably he did some weight training even in the early days

The problem with even the best weights and bodyweight exercises as a whole is that they train de-acceleration. This is because you need to develop the most force/power at the bottom of the lift, once its moving you no longer need as much power the higher it gets the easier it becomes. This takes away from speed somewhat, you're incredibly but boxers need follower through their punch rather than let it decellerate

To counter-act the de-acceleration when training with weights provide you need to increase the weight throughout the range of motion so you are actually training yourself to increase acceleration throughout the movement. To do this you can use chains and resistance bands attached to olympic weights. Weights should be lifted as fast as possible to develop speed.

Olympic multi-joint movements such as snatches/cleans/jerks also require the most explosivity and develop speed more than any other exercises

See I would distinguish between the two for the purpose of our (running) argument on the evolution of boxing, princippally because bodyweight resistance stuff has been around forever, weight-training has developed.

It must interest you that Tyson at his most explosive testified to doing "nothing like that at all"?

I agree with some of the other stuff you say though.

1987. The narrator talks about Bruno's TKOing Tillis in March.
