Just found this, with opinions by Holyfield, Bruno, Lewis, Mcrory [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpab0jB66dE[/ame] Very interesting comments by all of the guys
Great find! Never seen this before. They all seemed shocked that Tyson appeared sluggish and out of it, commenting on the amateurish corner treatment between rounds. I love Bruno's assessment. Another reason why I'm a big fan of Frank Bruno!
There were two significant factors in that fight. Douglas and Tyson. Neither seems to have been their normal self that night!
Excellent rare find Azzer. :good Bruno, Lewis & Mcrory all made a very intelligent analysis. Some quotes i've typed up from the video... "From the first bell when he came in, his balance weren't right, his timing weren't right, the aggression, the fire, everything weren't right. I couldn't really say what went wrong." ~ Frank Bruno "He just wasn't there, you know, he was getting caught with silly punches & everything." ~ Frank Bruno "As Frank says, Tyson just wasn't there, & Buster Douglas did everything right." ~ Glen Mcrory "Right from the very start, we all picked up on the fact that the timing & the speed & the aggression were not quite there from Tyson" ~ Presenter "We all noticed that, it just wasn't the same Tyson, you know he'd go back to the corner each round, & he'd just put his head down, his mind didn't seem like he was into it. He actually looked bored out there. " ~ Lennox Lewis "He just didn't seem there at all, like he was on a different planet, he was moonwalking. Some people bodypop, but he was moonwalking, like when he was going back to the corner & putting his head down, he just wasn't there." ~ Frank Bruno "When he's in difficulty, & you come back to your corner, all fighters have difficulty, they've all got a patch to come through, & he was in difficulty, coming back to his corner, we didn't hear any words of encouragement, it seemed a totally negative corner, they didn't seem to have anything to pump him back up, & he just went the whole fight with his head down" ~ Glen Mcrory "I feel his corner was in shock, you know, an inexperienced corner, like you know, he made a big mistake i feel, letting going of Kevin Rooney, because Kevin Rooney would know what to do in that kind of situation. When they seen that Tyson wasn't really upto his own self, they didn't really say anything. You know you never really heard anything, they were in shock themselves." ~ Lennox Lewis "It didn't look as if he was going to make the count, & it seemed a very slow count, but up he got, & he was very very lucky that the bell went straight after, that was a stroke of luck. Luck was on his side tonight." ~ Glen Mcrory
Has such a god awfull corner team, ever before or since, been entrusted with helping such an elite fighter?
Probably never! They were the ridiculously incompetent, ludicrously inexperienced, Don King Circus of Fools. Aaron Snowell, Jay Bright & a condom of tap water. :barf
Tyson losing to Douglas was not really a blip or a freak loss to a journeyman. Douglas, if you examine his record, always was a great fighter, he just blew hot and cold because he was not groomed like a regular prospect. Around the Tyson fight he was genuinely among the best 3 fighters in the world. we just didn’t know it or credit that buster could be at that time. he slipped under the radar. unlike most chalengers Douglas was neither confused or discouraged so Tyson never got out of the blocks. A fully or adequately trained Tyson would still be discouraged if he was getting hit each time he tried anything. Douglas put Tyson out of his comfort zone because he was having success. ALL NIGHT Buster knew what Tyson was going to do before he did it. and he made him pay. where ever his kisser was that night buster had a punch on it.
Nice on the Braddock quote, it totally applies. I do think the corner was a factor, just like the champs in the video do. That was appalling- Mike was trying his best, fighting hard, and they had NOTHING to help him. When an opponent is ascendant like Douglas was that night, you need to be there for your fighter and give him good advice, not vaguely scold him and say, lets go, let it go! Mike was doing all he was able that night, nothing else was working out in his favor.
Disturbing to hear how clearly Evander spoke then compared to his unintelligible speech now. Snowell was Witherspoons trainer for Holmes
This guy seems biased enough. It was quite clear that Douglas would have beaten even a correct ten count. He was listening to the count and waiting to get up.
Pretend the 30% extra time didn't help Buster recover if you want, but he was still wobbly when he finally got up. He was indeed very lucky when the bell went straight afterwards, to end the 8th round. Just a couple of big punches would've felled the jelly legs of Douglas for sure. In the minute between the 8th & 9th, Tyson lost what little adreneline he had & was totally exhausted, whereas Buster regained his senses & left ***** Steet.
Yes in the Holyfield fight. Same clown in the corner but this time as the head trainer and not the assistant so really it was worse. Both Jay Bright and Aaron Snowell were not trainers around the time of the Douglas fight. Snowell was a close friend of Tim Witherspoons and hung around him as Spoon went through the ranks and stuck around working in Don Kings gym. He did become somewhat of a decent trainer with his work with Frankie Randall and Timmy Austin. Bright was the same way with Tyson, a close friend, but never stuck around the gym to learn anything about boxing. Its amazing how a fighter could be so stupid to make the same mistakes over and over.
