What happens in the ring is the referee's call, the safety of the fighters should always his first priority, and the referee is the sole judge of whether a fighter has beaten a ten count.
Im not disputing those points at all, just that the ref did not pickup the count correctly from the ringside ref in charge of knockdown seconds, and its clear by the coverage.
But it does not matter; the referee is the sole judge of a ten count, he has no need to "pick up the count", it is his call.
Again you're incorrect on that and the reason they have a ringside knockdown seconds counter. If not a ref could give as long as he wants to allow a fighter to get up. The ref can stop his count for whatever reason but he must pickup the count by the ringside official. He cannot exceed the count if he chooses.
The referee is the sole judge of a ten count, a ringside official is a tool he can use. The referee can also stop a ten count anytime he wishes, too.
That's because Tyson was completely out of it while Douglas wasn't. This has little relevance to his point.
Agreed. Both counts were improperly executed: Douglas got up on steady legs, Tyson looked like he'd forgotten his name and had his mouthpiece in backwards. Easy call.
You could tell Lennox Lewis even then, fancy his chances against Mike Tyson. He's not all up his ass like the rest are, and his demeanour is of a quiet arrogance.
Here is the official rule. The ref cant start and stop at his discretion. The rules are clear as to when and how he is able to do that. When a boxer has been knocked down, the referee shall order the opponent to the farthest neutral corner of the ring and pick up the count from the timekeeper or the official counting for knockdowns. Should the opponent fail to stay in the corner as direct by the referee, the referee shall stop the count at the point that it was interrupted. In the event of any knockdown, the timekeepers count will cease when picked up the referee whose count shall prevail and be relied on by the boxers. Meyran failed to pickup the count of the ringside ref, thats different than counting too slow or stopping the count because Douglas was not where he was supposed to be once he picked up the count.
Who's justifying? The video shows the exact same, improper count. Tyson was just out of it. Douglas would've got up regardless, he was fine. These arguments get annoying and tiresome. Dempsey-Tunney long count has far more controversy because Tunney was actually much more hurt.
My point is the official rules means nowt, as the referee is the sole judge of a ten count. He can use the tools (other officials) around if he wants, it is his call. Meyran did nothing wrong, Douglas did nothing wrong, Tyson did nothing wrong...
