:good Tyson was extremely vain, & at 248lbs just 2 weeks before the fight, his only choice was to crash diet & dehydrate, in order to lose the flabby appearance. Sadly, it made him listless & lethargic.

:patsch To be in shape you do. To give yourself the best chance of winning you do.

OK, so erase "crash diet" and use "Starved himself." What else would you call eating one meal a day: Soup and salad?

How else was he going to lose the weight that quickly?

If Tyson showed up at 248 without training how would he do and look like?

Tyson's problem was that he started training late and was fat. "Late" as far as the inactivity between fights and the amount of weeks he only trained. To fat to strip the weight off gradually and healthy. That's why he used to be no more than 15 pounds over his fighting weight. This way, he could still eat healthy and the weight would gradually come off during camp. Kevin Rooney talks about this.

His "in shape" weight for his size and his overall ability was 215-220. That was the mark he had to make. So in order to get to that weight he used a crash diet to strip the weight off because he started camp six weeks out.

TYSON GAVE HIMSELF A SPECIFIED WEIGHT. DID YOU EVER WATCH HIS INTERVIEWS AROUND THAT TIME AND HOW SPECIFIC HE IS ABOUT WEIGHT?

Ex: Today's HWs, most, don't give a ****. That's why they show up Fat and disgusting and have little chance of beating the real PROS, the fighters that stay in shape and do have a specified "fighting weight,"____LIKE THE KLITSCHKOS.

Have you ever noticed how the Klitsckos are always around the same weight when they fight?

Now go back and look at Tyson's weight all the way through his career.
And also pay attention to his activity level. When active, it prevented him from ballooning up in weight which means, whatever little fat he did put on in-between fights could easily come off during training with a normal healthy balanced diet.

Now when he was more "inactive," when he was with KIng, his weight ballooned up very high. And he tended to start camp later/shorter weeks. This, was terrible for his body. And when they body is unhealthy, so is the mind___and vice-versa.
You also start to focus more on losing the weight than focusing on perfecting your technique and your opponent.

It's too bad there wasn't more leaks about the fact Berbick and McCall had given an out of condition Tyson a thumping in sparring pre Japan. I knew about Page because there was video footage, but not the others. It might have put a slant on the 40/1 odds on Tyson beating what was considered just another unlikely opponent. Good post though!

great read, tyson was definitely the most exciting fighter i've ever seen but he was an absolute fool to get rid of kevin rooney. can remember watching the douglas fight and it was the most shocked i've ever been watching a fight, I didn't expect douglas to last 2 rounds and even though tyson wasn't himself, douglas gave an unbelievable performance that night.

hopefully another fighter will come along in the heavyweight division sometime soon and provide that kind of excitement again but there seems to be a lack of fighters in this era who come out bombing from the opening bell and are not interested in pacing themself, the likes of tyson, benn, hearns, jackson, and mcclellan seem like a thing of the past.

head you give rooney too much credit

he was drunk then and he is drunk now

a blind man could get that version of tyson to a title

i'm not saying rooney is a great trainer or anything but he was perfect for tyson, he knew how cus brought tyson up, and he kept it real with tyson, he wasn't a yes man and back slapper kissing mikes ass and just telling mike what he wanted to here. he was a master at the training drills that cus used for tyson and it was noticable that tysons head movement and combination punching detiorated when rooney left.

maybe i give rooney too much credit and there's a good chance tyson would have blown up at some point anyway living the high life but i just think rooney leaving was the final straw for tyson and when he had fully broke from his roots and was under kings full control then tyson was always going to spiral out of control.
