Would you say he hit harder before or after his years in prison?

I know he started lifting heavily after prison, and I honestly think he might of hit harder with single punches than he ever did before.

He lost the combination punching, speed, accuracy, and so on... But for raw power...

Before prison his punches were alot sharper and IMO more devasting.

After prison he appeared more heavy handed but IMO less effective.

they may not be to accurate with the topic but on account with tony tubbs, tyson was the hardest puncher that he had ever faced. but bonecrusher smith said that mike weaver, tim witherspoon and frank bruno punched harder then tyson... they probably just dident have the speed, defense, punch output, aggressiveness and technique that tyson had.

And Bonecrusher beat them, but lost to Tyson. I wonder if old Bonecrusher is being totally honest here. Bruno and Weaver could possibly have hit harder, but Witherspoon?

In any event, Ironchamp put forth a great response. I think personally that Tyson's power changed little if at all after prison.
I'm not convinced that lifting weights makes one a harder puncher. After all, you're born with a talent to punch, or you're not.

Very True, one look at Kelly Pavlick proves that.

I agree about tyson being more heavy-handed post prison. In the late 80's he was all about leverage. His punches had so much velocity on them - that's where the power came from.

Very good point. Sometimes people don't seem to understand that being a 'great puncher' is at least as much about how well you are able to get your punches in there as it is about how hard there are.
There have undoubtedly been plenty of 300-pound monsters who hit harder than Tyson, but who didn't have anything remotely like the kind of coordination, speed and explosiveness that he had.
And how much devastating power did Tyson really show in the last 5 or so years of his career when his speed and combination punching ability had pretty much evaporated?

Probably because Crusher spent so much time running round and clinching in desperation not to get hit hard and ko'ed he didn't take Tyson's best punches. He actually fought the other guys whilst he totally dogged it vs Tyson. Not the comparative actions of a man who thought the others hit harder.

    Absolutely,

Tyson's ability to generate power through balistic speed and shear force is where is power came from, and not just muscle put on through weight training. As a fighter or any athlete ages, their ability to keep their momentum going diminishes. It happens with NFL football players as well. A defensive lineman who can plow through a blocker and sack a quarterback in his prime, sometimes loses some of that power through old age or inactivity, even though he may have additional muscle mass at a later age.

Bonecrusher said before his fight with Tyson that he was going to bomb Tyson out the way Foreman did Frazier! But Bonecrusher forgot to throw punches like Foreman did. He was too afraid of leaving himself open to Tyson's counters!

    80's tyson was superior.

The difference in the two Tyson's, the 80's Tyson set up his punches and threw combinations to knock his oppenents out, the after prison version threw little combinations and was always looking for that one big left hook. I feel his single power was either the same or slightly better in the older days, when he was able to land his punches with more accuracy and a good bit faster with his delivery, which translates into the harder/ more devastating knockout.
