Bit of a random thread but I was doing some work there and had the spotify automatic thing on and American Pie (Madonna version) came on. It just took me right back to those nights with Deontay Wilder. Shame he didn't keep going like he did at that point. That was a really exciting time. Agree or disagree?
He definitely did. Wilder trilogy was a banger, first Usyk fight was fantastic too. Whyte fight was a spectacle. Him singing American Pie and Walking In Memphis and walking out to Patsy Cline and AC/DC is timeless. Too bad he messed all of this up by behaving like a d*ckhead after his "retirement" in 2022.
When he made his comeback in 2018, Fury was very active — boxed six times in a little over 18 months, including two fights with Wilder. Since February 2020, he’s only boxed another six times, and therein lies the problem. When he came back he breathed life back into the division and the sport. But once he won the title back and the big money followed, so did the inactivity. No promoter is going to put him out there three times a year on what he wants paying. It now requires either Saudi backing, huge stadiums, or PPV… and often all three together. If promoters put their biggest names out three times a year for the purses they expect, they’d all go bankrupt. The demand isn’t there, and fans won’t stump up for PPV after PPV and stadium fight after stadium fight. Even now we’re already getting a PPV about once a month — if all the top names fought three times a year, we’d be looking at a PPV every single week. So it’s difficult for anyone to truly set the sport alight for an extended period nowadays, and it’ll only get worse — unless the Saudis monopolise the sport and then reduce the purses.
The Wilder trilogy was great but fighting Whyte and Chisora was poor and then he got done by a "gap tooth middleweight midget", twice. The homeless aren't homeless anymore though thanks to his generosity, he gave his fight purse away to help the homeless, what a man.
Drug cheat, compulsive liar, fibs about giving money to charity and calls himself a mental health ambassador but calls people ugly bog eyed so and so’s. Was great seeing the ‘middleweight’ have him wobbling all over the ring.
The best British Heavyweight in the era post Klitschko and pre Usyk by a country mile. Some great nights
I don’t think you can criticise him fighting Whyte. He was WBC mandatory at the time. Chisora on the other hand was total shite.
It's not cheating if they're all doping. If you don't dope, you won't cope. Ask Enzo Maccarinelli, and he couldn't cope even at that.
All of that is true but it started with Fury removing the Wlad Klitschko heavyweight domination of 11 years and 22 fights.
