Prime Evander Holyfield that Bowe beat was a legit heavyweight, even if he had to bulk up to get there and beating Prime Holyfield is no small potatoes and it's not like anyone could have done it. It's a great accomplishment and not an "oh by the way" kind of win.

As time goes on we have to review things and fighters regarded as hot at one time get demoted later on.

Ten years ago Riddick Bowe was seen as hot stuff. I’m talking top 5 ATG. Wonderful attributes, but I would argue at the time that his resume was not much different to Buster Douglas. The difference being one beat Holyfield and the other beat Tyson with the rest of their resume being historically average.

After years of reflection the considerations of later fighters that come and go eventually put earlier thoughts into perspective. And so it will be with Fury and Wilder and Joshua and Ruiz.

As it stands Fury is the one with a world class win. He has won a fight that decided the best heavyweight but it took two fights to get there. Let’s not be too hasty. There is a lot of history behind him and a lot of history to make in front of him. Let’s see if he is up to it.

Fury beat the mystical Deontay Wilder....
So a win over Wilder defines the GOAT?

This is madness this win does not prove he could beat the likes of Lewis for god sake.

He'd lose often. If you two best wins are over a 39 year old and Wilder, you don't match up in the early 1990's. I'd pick Fury to beat Old Foreman, but not Tyson, Lewis or Bowe.

It's epidemic around here. I wonder who other boxing boards see it? Here's how I see it. Wilder was a USA hype job with a legion of fans. Fury is one of the few good UK born heavies. He has a big fan base too. After Fury thrashed Wilder, they are thinking he was a great win, and the Wilder fans are thinking Fury must be something special because he beat Wilder.

The reality if Fury is relatively untested and has a lot more to prove, and Wilder was a hyped and very protected puncher fighting old men or unranked me. Once Wilder get's KO'd again, this win will lose its luster. Or if Wilder could somehow become champion it will mean a lot. I'm betting on the former having a much better chance than the later.

If Tyson Fury was entering his boxing prime in 1989, he would probably be named Larry Fury.

Beating Wlad and Wilder definitely is one of the best two win lists in heavyweight history. Those were not split decisions.

Fury may turn out to be a great alongside Tyson, Holyfield and Lewis but on the hand it wouldn’t be that big a shock if he got beaten by Joshua in his next fight even though I can’t see Joshua ever being called an atg.
