Sorry for posting this here but I originally posted a similar message in the boxing training section and it wasn't getting many responses (one in fact).

I was wondering how long it takes for a top conditioned boxer to completely lose his fitness or do boxers still maintain a level of their conditioning almost as part of their DNA?

I was thinking about Tyson Fury as an example. When he ballooned up to 400lbs was it easier for him to get in shape again due to the training he had done in the past than it would have been if he was 400lbs and had never trained intensely?

I remember him saying when he started training again that he was going to try an EIGHT MILE RUN after all he had been through with drug abuse and weight gain!!!

As it turned out, he wasn't able to complete the run and after half an hour, walked the rest.
    That's still impressive.

There is no way most men who are ten stone overweight could commence training with a 30 minute jog without having a heart attack!

Muscle memory is a thing...but I believe there is no such thing as cardio memory.

So was Tyson Fury no different than any other massively overweight slob when he resumed training because an 8 mile run is very ambitious and managing to run for 30 minutes is pretty impressive.

30 minutes at slow speed is about 3.5 miles so no this isn't anything special, even for a fat person.

Go to your local park Saturday morning, you will spot dozens of overweight people running 3 miles. Always the same people, who never improve.

But this was his very first run after all he had been through so it's different.

He's got a strong mindset, that's the main factor.

I'd bet they didnt start off being able to run for 30 minutes. Some people wouldn't be able to run for 3 minutes let alone 30. Everything is relative, they probably have been building up to that. I'm quite impressed if Fury was able to do 30 minutes at his size if that really was the first exercise he'd done in 2 years of living to excess.
