Are people now starting to realize he's a massive fraud.

    What took so long?

    He isn't even 6 foot 9. He's 6 foot 7

    It was not.

The WW2 situation was unique to WW2. Willards inactivity was all Willard.

Cut down when he was just a mere zygote.

So much promise. So much potential.

Poor lil fella never had a chance. :D

That contention might require a deeper dive.

Willard didn’t serve - and I think it was frowned up that he might potentially defend his title for good profit while others were overseas fighting in the war.

That’s not to cover off on the whole period of his inactivity - many champs back in those days found easier ways to earn money with the title in hand - exhibitions, appearances etc.

I don’t know if there was any specific uproar over Willard’s inactivity. He beat Johnson - job done, otherwise I don’t know that people were pining so much for Jess to get back in the ring - including due to the context of the war.

Suffice to say, Willard’s effort vs Frank Moran didn’t promise much for exciting future bouts from the Big Cowboy and due to his size, people might’ve figured he’d win anyway.

Even the streaking Dempsey was an underdog - primarily due to the size disadvantage.

It wasn't inactivity, he actually left the sport and became a carnival fatman.
It wasn't like he was delaying or avoiding fights, he left.

Hit the nail on the head there Mate.
It's that all important perfect record nowadays, no big L s allowed.
But it doesn't matter if a loss makes you learn and fight better.

Nobody can jump on the Fury bandwagon anymore after he beats Usyk

Fury has been denigrated and molested for years now after giving a trilogy of greatness. All the fair weather fans can die in a hole for all I care

Well US involvement in WW1 was only a year and a half and that only covers a bit of Willards inactivity. The LHW belt did not go on extended vacation though theres a bit of debate about which fights were and weren't for the title. In WW1 most of the top HWs did not end up serving and Willards would be title opponents all fought throughout the war(in the ring not in Europe). And they all would have loved to fight him and win the title. Whether that be Fred Fulton, Carl Morris or Billy Miske.

Part of why WW2 had duration belts is because that war was expected to last 5 years and many top fighters were going to serve. That wasn't really the case in WW1.

Sure, I stated the date the US entered the war in a previous post, noting that it didn’t cover off on the full period of inactivity in question. We had Willard fighting in 1915 (for the tile), 1916 (defence) but not in 1917 and 1918. Basically, Jess had 2 title defences over 4 1/4 years.

I’m definitely not defending Willard for sitting on the title - if that’s the fact and explanation for the whole period - then so be it - I’ve just read that WW1 and perhaps an associated, official or unofficial freeze on HW Title fights might’ve contributed to a portion of that inactivity.

If he doesn’t mind, I’d be interested if @apollack might wish to input as to whether WW1 inhibited Willard’s schedule in any way.

I have Adam’s Dempsey book part 1 but am too lazy to review the book atm. Lol.
