Anyone notice that the Tyson Fury apologists here seem to be starting to reach the numbers of the Mike Tyson apologists?
Go to the body, let's not act like Fury is unbeatable because he's tall. Besides, Louis fought a lot of fighters much taller than him. He wouldn't, Louis wasn't a pressure fighter. Louis fought a lot on backfoot, watch his fights against Baer for example.
I know, I don't think Devon has had enough exposure to Louis' fights. Both Louis and Frazier couldn't have cared less how tall someone is, the height thing is kind of a ridiculous argument. The whole "boxers have progressed" thing is hilarious. Why, because they use PEDs and know how to beat the test now? Prime Louis would still knock the hell out of the champs today. Same with 60s Ali, early 80s Holmes, Steward-era Lewis...Tyson.
Slightly off topic, but does anyone else hold Louis as the proverbial 'KO-King'? Look at his highlight reel, and the amount of stunning knockouts he had. Braddock, Galento, Schmeling II, Walcott II, the Baer fights, Simon ect. ect. The guy was a KO machine.
Your man Schmeling has some real P4P power too. Breaking guys like Stribling, Walker, Louis and Risko's chins is highly impressive.
I like smart and powerful punchers in general: Fitzsimmons, Langford, Schmeling, Louis, Moore - these are my favorites.
I'm not really fussy, I like everything from Duran to Charles, from Marvin Johnson to Emile Griffith!
Marvin was the muh'****in' man! Seriously though, him and Charles are my all-time joint favourites. Everyone else is playing catch-up. I actually think Pops underachieved, he could've beaten quite a few of the guys he never fought IMO. Especially in 10 rounders. Conteh and Scott notably, but also, and this is the big one.... Marvin Hagler.
His left was DEVASTATING. It's so coincidental, I just had to watch the Saad Johnson championship fight again this morning! Marvin had a lot of heart, even when Saad was just racking up the devastating combinations Marvin was still winding up (and sometimes landing) that monster left. To me Marvin was one of the ATGs at that weight. That was one determined, powerful mother****er.
My grandad once said about Saad that: 'if he didn't knock your head off, he'd sure go down trying!' I think it works for Pops, too. His left uppercut is my all-time favourite punch.
