Not for me, they need talent too, otherwise Rocky would do to them what he did to Humphrey Jackson. One other thing that needs mentioning here is Louis proved he could kayo giants of reasonable quality,he had the all round class to go with his awesome power. Rockista's always make much play about Rocky's vaunted strength and Im quite prepared to believe it, Archie Moore called him the strongest man he ever faced,[not the hardest punching,]but Moore was 188lbs and nearly 40 years old. If Rocky managed to get inside on Fury I think he would be tossed around like a rag doll. Rocky is by far the greater fighter, but it's like putting Jimmy Wilde in with a Maidana or a Mayorga, the size overcomes the class at some point.Fury can also actually box and is very savvy.I don't like the big mouthed prat , but facts are facts.
I'll go with this. Granted he looked great on his "Buster Douglas" night against Klitschko, and granted he's a mountain of a man that's mobile into the bargain. But. But he also fought an OLD Klitschko with a bunch of martital problems. His chin is somewhat suspect and he's a featherfist for his size. And he's never fought a Marciano or a Louis, two guys that would absolutely not be afraid to let their hands fly, and often. I honestly don't know if Fury could ever regain the form he had on that one night, nor how the fight would go. But I personally suspect that he's going to come out lumped up and outpointed if he's lucky.
The thing that separates Fury and the other bigger guys of this era, apart from his combination of speed and size, is his ring I.Q. Out the ring to the untrained eye he comes across as ignorant, stupid and crude, but he's quite clearly a clever man and isn't afraid to speak out against the 'system' in boxing and tell it how it is. He just chats a lot of smack to get his name out there
Also those who are calling his performance against Klitschko a one off, clearly aren't giving him the time of day, because if you'd watched his career from the start, it was clear as day to see how well he developed over time and how much he learnt from his previous encounters
It has one of the salient characteristics of a one off, in that it only happened once! You could pick a Jack Sharkey fight where he showed sublime skills, but that doesn't mean that he beats all and sundry!
By this logic you could pick somebody like Primo Carnera or Henry Akinwande over Marciano. I am not writing off Fury's chances here, but perhaps we should wait and see a bit more of him before making such picks?
Fury?...Marciano & Louis? You're joking...right? Why mention him with 2 ATG fighters? Fury?...really???
Go watch the first McDermott fight, a fight he probably should have lost. He was in what, his 8th, 9th pro fight against one of the best domestic heavies in Britain who had given Danny Williams 2 incredibly tough fights. Way out of his depth he still stepped up to the plate, took everything that was thrown at him, returning fire as best as he could. Clearly Fury realised he needed to work on his movement, and use his height and long reach to his advantage and learned from it. If you watch that fight there isn't that much to suggest he would be beating the undisputed heavyweight King for the last 10 years (minus Vitali) apart from the grit and determination he showed. What he added to that fighting spirit was an unpredictable and unorthodox style that was only enhanced by his great movement speed, long jab and fantastic ring I.q
GREAT post! I agree entirely. Btw, for Marciano fans thete is a great new bio of Rocky out called,"UNBEATEN" by Mike Stanton. Reading it now and love it.
Difficult perhaps. Impossible, no. The guy that Fury just fought in his "comback" was way shorter than Fury and way less skilled than Rocky and he managed to land some punches.
He would get ran out of the ring . he beat what an almost 40 year old KT and thats impressive?? And they were suppose to rematch he basically backed out. And if they fought TODAY Rocky would more then likely weigh over 190 pounds. Fought back then hed get DQ for running not to mention what they would do to him once they got on the inside. You have to remember back then THEY ACTUALLY FOUGHT. Rough stuff on the inside was ALLOWED. You clinch too much you end up with a DQ and you aint getting any future bouts. You are matching up a cream puff against men of steel who fought great opposition for YEARS in a time where boxing was much more brutal.
