I just find it odd that size stops being an issue when the fighter involved is from the 70s. How is Marciano beating Foreman any less ludicrous than Foreman beating Joshua or Fury?
Foremans style seems to be heavily based on being the stronger man in the ring. He comes right at his opponents with little regard for defense. Against a smaller guy that might work but against someone like Joshua or Fury that doesn't seem like a winning formula
Great post. And Frazier didn't only have success on the ropes. He made Alis range work against him in the middle of the ring too: https://gfycat.com/gifs/detail/naturalcluelesshammerheadshark Imagine Fury getting his range and rhythm set against someone who combines great head movement on the inside, suffocating pressure positioning, non linear footwork, strafing angles, and homerun punches at a non stop full effort pace: https://streamable.com/np3iz It would be a tough task for sure.
I was not singling you out here. Obviously it is easier to favor Louis over him than Marciano, because he proved very conclusively that he matched up well against larger heavyweights. Even so, the fact that Marciano didn't fight that sort of heavyweight, does not mean that he would lose to them. It just means that we have no data one way or the other.
Yes, but we have a bit of data. We know a low tier SHW can't survive two minutes with Rocky with their size alone.
The evidence that we have from second tier super heavyweights, suggests that he would at least be successful up to a point, against elite ones. Obviously we could back him with a lot more confidence, if the had performed well against somebody like Buddy Baer say.
Vitali injured his arm, he didn't punch himself out. What has Vitali to do wth Fury? They fought nothing alike two more opposite styles it would be hard to find! Impeccable defence? Wow. How come he was cut in every major fight? Was the referee perhaps hitting him on the sly?
If you say so. Vitali punched himself out and quit. Byrd had Vitali reaching and punching down the whole fight, which resulted in Vitali being arm weary and tired in the later rounds. If Vitali was really injured like he said he would've re-matched Byrd as soon as he was healed, but both Vitali and his team rejected Byrd's re-match offer and chose to fight Timo Hoffman instead. An old and and out of shape Zack Page was able to get past Fury's jab and even found his range on Fury in the middle rounds. Fury's own coach made Fury be more selective with his punches, since Page was making Fury punch down. Fury vs. Zack Page This content is protected Fury has a better punch selection than Vitali, but has slower hands. Also, he was punching down in the Chisora fight, but Chisora is too heavy and doesn't have the conditioning to use Fury's height and reach against like Maricano could. Marciano's defense was impeccable. Considering the competition that he fought a few cuts here and there isn't a big deal. He fought guys that were full time fighters and that were also very experienced. Once he was hurt Marciano would find a way to neutralize his opponents best tools and then he would take them out.
