Lot of hate thrown Listons way but upon further research of the mans record it’s more impressive then Holmes. Holmes didn’t have very good competition to face and he even avoided a few people. Liston faced more prime opposition and knocked them out a lot quicker. Love Holmes and had he had his “Frazier” in his prime he’d be higher in my list. Would have loved to see him fight Foreman when they were younger.
Beats the heck out of Foreman's list...I'm not sure Lennox Lewis quite deserves to be placed above George Foreman. Lewis was quite great, of course. 1. Ali 2. Louis 3. Holmes 4. Holyfield 5. Foreman (Big George just barely edges Lewis, and Holyfield just barely edges Foreman so 4, 5, and 6 are more than highly debatable imo).
Liston is a fighter, like Tyson, whom has greatly risen in my eyes since my time on this forum. Gazelle definitely had me rewatching a lot of Liston's fights....and tbh, I think Frazier and Ellis did a bit (or more than a bit) of ducking Sonny. Ellis would have been pole axed badly by Sonny (probably worse than what Shavers did to him, Patterson III). And Frazier peaked by far when he fought Ali, two years after Liston died (or was killed). The problem for me rating Liston is that he was ignorantly looked over seemingly during both Patterson and Ingo's reigns (not his fault of course, he was the best at the time), plus the abovementioned ducks after the Ali ko. But Gazelle has validity to what he's saying: Liston overall was a sensational fighter, even past his prime, which many feel was right around the time of the first Ali fight. I have mad respect for him, incredible jab and freakishly terrifying persona...great, great fighter.
His title reign was almost non existent. Which is probably why his legacy isn’t as great as some others. But his wins and dominance over the division before hand are what was incredible .
It's inspiring watching him fight both before and after the Ali fights. I think it's a huge credit to Ali that he beat him, especially considering that Sonny continued to be easily one of the top heavies for years after the losses.
That is his list, but it’s not bad at all, however I would switch out Tyson for foreman and rearrange the order a bit
No Louis, and Tyson above Holmes, Lewis and Holyfield (among others) really doesn't sit right with me.
