To be honest, I think Douglas was superior to Biggs. And I think Biggs was a superb talent, just not seasoned and mentally disciplined enough.

i disagree about Snipes and Cooper at the respective points in their careers. I mean, Cooper looked devastating KOing Willie DeWit up in Canada and was favoured to beat Williams, whereas Snipes had slumped at world level. But it's a minor point and I might be wrong.

Of course, I agree that Tyson was degraded when he fought Douglas, but I also think Douglas was probably a better fighter than those others if you compare them on the nights they fought Tyson.

I think Douglas was better than Biggs too, but like you said, he wasnt seasoned and wasnt really ready to fight on that level. He was thrown into the fire far too early, and I think that was because of his personal issues, his promoters might have wanted to cash out before they lost their investment in him.
Snipes was still better than Cooper, he was much more competitive with top class fighters, regardless of who Cooper put on the canvas.
As far as Douglas, again, I believe Tysons poor mindset had something to do with him looking so good. A well prepared and focused Tyson could have very well made Douglas a footnote to Tysons reign, nonetheless the debate rages on!

Tony Tucker doesn't have anywhere near the coordination or athletic ability Buster Douglas has. It's not even close... I don't care if Douglas is largely a flash in the pan. He's potential is far greater than the other pretenders.

Bang on!!! A focused Tucker had more in his locker than Douglas! Tucker for raw natural talent should not be underestimated... shame was as with many in that era pure talent was not matched with application and dedication!

We have to look at these things from a style point of view and not necessarily "who was better." Even if Tucker was better then Douglas, one guy may have posed a stylistic issue for Tyson and the other didn't. Tucker was the kind of guy that I feel Tyson beats on most of all occasions. Lots of movement, distance fighter, clinches a lot. Those guys can go 12 rounds with Tyson by fighting safe but Mike either outworks them or knocks them out eventually.

Douglas fought a standup fight with Mike, outfought him, out jabbed him, outmuscled him. He didn't clinch often. He pushed Mike off or fought him off. No doubt that Mike was lacking the intensity and skill that he had displayed several years earlier though. I go back and forth on this fight all the time. Sometimes I feel that Douglas fought the ultimate fight, at other times I feel Tyson was too unfocused. In the Bruno fight and in sparring leading up to the fight Tyson looked sloppy; loading up bombs with little head movement, flat-footed, showing very little of the intensity he had earlier.

Like I said, I just except that the truth is somewhere in the middle. Douglas came around at the perfect time when Tyson was at his most overconfident and perhaps unfocused, and he had the best reason to fight the fight of his life. Everything came together for Douglas and came apart for Tyson that night.

I agree with your last paragraph. In no way was it ever my intention to take away from Douglas performance, it was stellar. What I don't believe is that Douglas was some super fighter who only fufilled his full potential on one night. As you said Tysons lack of focus and preparation had something to do with it.
As far as styles, Douglas and Tucker fought very similarly and Tucker emerged as the more consistent better pro on that level.

I know Styles make fights but Tyson beat Lewis more convincing than Lewis did (both times). I know your a big Lewis guy just thought id throw that out. I have Tyson 7th on my all time heavyweight list 2to 3 spots higher than Lennox. I agree with the TM most of the top 5 Heavys would have their hands full iwith Tyson however id pick a prime Ali over Tyson. HTH i dont have too many heavys over Prime Tyson only ones id probably pick to beat him would be Ali,Foreman an Holyfield. Only reason i dont rank him higher is because resume wise his dont stack up to Louis,Holmes,Johnson the 3 picked to beat him also have better resumes. Lewis has more big wins but his big knockout losses hurt him IMO(despite winning the rematches).

the tyson that beat spinks holmes biggs berbick etc would have crushed douglas without a doubt from 89 onwards tyson was there for the taking his boxing technique went down the tubes no jab he threw one punch at a time and most importantly he was a lot easier to hit .

Yeah. Bruno just froze up the second time. He'd actually improved from their first fight, physically, imo while Tyson had deteriorated, but Tyson just got to him mentally in the latter fight.

Yes, you have the truth I have the fiction.

Douglas looks so much more aesthetically pleasing that the comparison is hard to digest.

    Gotta disagree with you there.

Tucker was 6'5 and fluid. That's a very, very rare combination.

That's the word right there, fluid. I don't think Tucker is anywhere near as fluid as Douglas. And he's not as technical proficient either.
