This is the furthest from the truth. Great fighters maintain their status at the championship level because of their trainers.

    Bull for the most part.

Great fighters have changed trainers before and remained on the same level.

This is empirical proof that what you say is wrong.

    Fighters usually make trainers.

It is a dead end argument anyway.

Like who? Give me some examples of a successful fighter who downgraded as much as Tyson did and remained as successful?

I thought you were going to ask about examples of guys who have switched trainers and remained successful.

I don't know what you mean by this though.

One problem with Tyson is that he went to Prison. We do not really know how much he eroded.

Would he have beaten Holyfield? Bowe? Foreman?

No idea (well, maybe something of an idea about Foreman). It is an unknown but ever **** thinks they know, just like every **** has a damn ATG list.

Hell, OP admitted that he was not objective in this, taking it personally. This is not an argument that will ever be resolved. People give their opinions and that is that.

    It is a mug's debate.

Jazzo is kind of right. You can't lose a trainer and then fall apart completely. Tyson has too many exscuses.

What I mean by it is that once you reach the championship level you are facing the best fighters, the smartest fighters, the craftiest fighters. I dont care how good a fighter is, at some point he is going to come accross an unfavorable style matchup or a fighter who is crafty enough to negate his attributes or expose his weaknesses. Thats when the corner comes into play and is most needed to find the opening or correct a problem.

As I said, you cant maintain dominance at the top of the sport without one. Aaron Snowell and Jay Bright were not qualified championship level trainers at the time. Bright never was and would never be.

That's what i'm saying though, i'm not buying it. Tyson was a man at the point, Buster Douglas just had his mum die and look at what he did. The excuse is one i used to use for Tyson but i've just voided it now to be blunt. Buster Douglas deserves full credit the way i see it, without any ifs or buts about it. Just my opinion.

Interestingly, Tyson was a magnificent roaring blaze in his breathtaking destruction of WBC champ Berbick in 1986, yet when sparring for the Douglas fight, a past prime 35 year old Berbick was schooling Tyson.

Douglas won virtually every round but Tyson was nearly shot "skills-wise" by that point according to Lefthook.

Tokyo Douglas beats any version of Tyson more times than not, no doubt.
