Holyfield TKOed Tyson the first time. Fighters did a lot of money. What was the reason to make a rematch? Were fans happy?
It was such a monster hit that they felt it could be a natural cert rematch where both guys were fored up enough to go at it again and make a ton of money once more.. Plus, i honestly think Mike Tyson thought it was a fluke for Evander to beat him.. I went to the first and the whole evening was amazing.. The rematch was purely a rage filled Mike exploding in the worse way.. It was never going to be like an Ali v Frazier trilogy but like all DKP promotions , a rematch is always a must.. God bless..
I believe they neede to rematch i personally think Tyson stupidly took Holyfield lightly and acted as though all he had to do was turn up and land a bomb. He got beat in a good fight and the obvious route to take then was a rematch. Plus for the big $$ payments they would once again get!
Tyson had such a super invincible image back then that even though he lost fairly to Holyfield, people are still not convinced. matter of fact, Holy was still an underdog during the rematch.
It was a huge upset. Rematches usually take place after the following: Very good fight Controversial/Inconclusive Ending Rematch Clause Upset Big Money Maker Mayweather-De La Hoya only fits the last one. It sucks when there are better fights to be made, but what can you do? Business is business.
Was Holyfield really an underdog going into the rematch? At the time, I remember reading a lot of different publications about the fight, & all had Evander as the sloght favourite. Tyson trained much harder for the rematch. I remember the weigh-in, Tyson weighed 218lbs, his lighest since the Ruddock rematch & Mike looked compact, extremely strong &m powerful. Holyfield came in at 218lbs, three lbs heavier than the first bout, but was still in great shape & ready to go. As already stated, the rematch was a disappoinment. Holyfield was winning the fight, but in round three, Mike was having his most successful spell against Evander, getting through with shots, throwing more than one-punch at a time, etc. Tyson should have stayed with it, rather than lose his temper like he did. I'm not saying Tyson would have won, but it would have been interesting to see the rematch unfold. Even though Mike was past his best, Tyson was still a better prepared boxer for the rematch than the first fight.
Holyfield was a massive underdog. I got 13-1 odds on him and won money (I only put like $25 so I ended up winning $325).
Yes I remember it clearly that Holyfield was the underdog in the rematch, I just can't remember by how much. During the Tyson-Lewis fight, I also heard that that was the first time Tyson was an underdog in a fight since he came into prominence.
That sums up what I think of their second fight. After such a build up and the drama of the first fight, the happenings of their second encounter left a bitter after-taste.
The difference is.. Everything involving tysons name appearing on the poster was a guarranteed Multi million dollar event.. If Mike was to sit in the ring reading the Koran 20,000 would pay to watch how long it took before the fireworks shook the place..
