Good video I found. Considering there is minor controversy regarding the "douglas longcount" thought I'd post this vid and see what you guys make of it. Personally I think douglas got up on time and deserved to carry on. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHcbFUTIslI&NR=1[/ame]
The 10 count is never literally 10 seconds but up to the referee's judgment for the most part. Otherwise there have been plenty of long and even short counts in some cases. In this case the referee had a habit of counting over 10 seconds, it was not only Douglas that he gave a longer count to.
This, this post, should be stickied in a thread all on its own in a thread marked READ THIS YOU ****ING IDIOT. That is not directed at the thread starter, who shared an interesting video. But of course he deserved to carry on, it's just like GA says. Until you hear ten you are not out.
I think the controversy is that people claimed he counted longer for douglas than he did for tyson. The video refutes this claim I believe. I generally agree about up to the ref, they should get some leeway by a second or so.
:thumbsup your right, and obviously Tyson was in way worse shape than douglas was when he got knocked down, so the referee would have been right in waving it off, even if the count hadnt reached 10 seconds. Tyson was very woozy getting up.
Yay common sense! And I agree with everybody. Douglas was clearly cognizant and timing the count. Tyson had no clue where he was and probably didnt know his name either. Him putting in the mouth piece backwards is a chuckle inducing image of ***** Street.
Awesome video. Proves the point that Meyran (who did a good job officiating this bout) didn't show favoritism toward any fighter; and that the stoppage of Tyson was the correct call to make. There was a lot of time left in round 10, and Iron Mike clearly wasn't in any condition to continue.
Seems fair to me. There is a certain ammount of flexability with counts. The fighter is listening to the referee not counting down himself. they were both afforded the same time but Mike was gone, Buster was timing it.
Of course, "long count controversies" shouldn't really be controversial. If you're up before he says "10" then you are not out. The referee does seem to stop counting when Douglas's gloves are still on the deck though, so maybe he caught a break there. But my eyes might be deceiving me, and refs are human beings, not robots. The only reason I even see it is because of some bull**** "controversy" cooked up by Don King and Jose Sulaiman in an effort to steal back the title for Tyson. I can't say Douglas was lucky, but I know Tyson was lucky that they ref reached ten and stopped the fight when he did. Tyson was in a bad way. Douglas had really beaten him up. It's a testament to Tyson's power than he could score such a heavy KD in such a one-sided losing effort. Tyson had very little success all night, but when it came briefly, Douglas was on his back. Tyson was a heck of a puncher.
Im a big tyson fan and wish he had won but I admit that while douglas' count was a lil long so was tysons. Douglas got up, tyson didn't. Simple as that.
Douglas picked up the refs count and got up but he got up slow with his head down. I don't think Douglas would have cared had he been counted out. Kudos to his corner for getting him refocused between rounds but the ref made a mistake but that had nothing to do with Douglas he only needs to focus on the refs count.
Big disappointment for me. The long count didn't bug me. It was the way Octavio Moron handled Douglas getting up from the knockdown. Moron looks into his eyes while Douglas is rising at the count of 9. Instead of grabbing the gloves to wipe off and asking Douglas if he's ok, Moron simply claps his hands together to establish the continuation of the round. Not sure it was going to matter, but it was a bumbling display.
I don't see this to be honest. Douglas looks clear and focus when he gets up whereas tyson (during the exact same span) looks all over the place. I totally agree with letting douglas continue and not letting tyson.
He slammed his fist on the floor shortly after he pulled himself up onto his side. That indicates that he was still aware of his surroundings and of what was happening inside the ring. I think he was more frustrated with himself than anything else which is why he had the hang-dog look when he got to his feet. Then again, there wasn't much time left in the round and Douglas responsive enough for Meyran to allow him to continue.
