Like he said himself, he got so under rated because so many naive fans believed in magic. Tyson v Bruno - big fight. Bruno had the WBC and gave Mike a fight first time round. And hell, he did this after 3 years of inactivity. That is nothing short of incredible.
I thought Bruno deserved to be rated number 2 behind Bowe at the time, so it was a big win for Tyson. Tyson looked really good too. Bruno was disappointing though. All Tyson fights were "big fights", so obviously he won big fights. As for notable opponents, he beat Ruddock and Bruno after 1990, and that's about it, Botha, Golota, Mathis, etc. weren't ever going to be real tests.
Bruno was on the verge of stopping Lennox Lewis before getting caught with a hail mary desperation left hook. A punch Lennox rarely ever threw. I had Bruno winning every round of that fight. He made Lennox look ridiculous.
Yeah, he should have taken on Lewis again in '96 instead of Tyson. But he'd been given the shot at McCall on condition that he'd face Tyson next. That's how King had it set up. Bruno would have stood a great chance of beating Lewis in a rematch.
I could argue that Bruno was further gone than Tyson at this point. He was on the verge of a mental breakdown and had a detached retina. He had to be virtualy pushed out into the ring. Perhaps more impresive in some ways is Tysons win over Gollota.
No, he didn't have a mental breakdown until years after. 2003 I think. And I think his issues were to do with trying to adjust to life without boxing, and the break down of his marriage. He did have have eye problems around this time though. But he'd had detached retina surgery in 1989 too. He was scared of Tyson, but some say Spinks was too. Nah. Golota had been completely blown out by Lewis, and had quit against Michael Grant. And he rivalled Bruno for being frightened, and was probably mentally unstable in his own right.
Tyson was slipping at an alarming rate after 1991, but his '96 KO over Bruno and his come-from-behind KO over Botha in 1999 deserve credit due...... Other than that, Tyson was basically **** after 1996.......bbb:hi: MR.BILL:hat
Ruddock was the closest Mike got to facing a decent/good heavyweight in the midst of their prime, since Tony Tucker that is.
Actually Tyson got Golota in the middle of his best run. He had just beat Orlin Norris and would go on to give Byrd and Ruiz hell before the Brewster blow out sent him into oblivion.
