after the spinks fight in 1988, tyson really declined technically. he no longer used his head movement or great combinations. but i still feel that he would of been more than a match for the ATG HW's despite the decline. when in shape he still had that great speed combined with great power I think he would of still beat most hw's in history. ali, holmes and lennox lewis are the only guys that i would really favour against him
Even against Tyson on the best I would favour a few. That version ot Tyson was beatable by quite some atgs in their prime. Guys like Ali and Johnson would beat him mentally even before the fight, Jeffries and Holyfield would frustrate and stop him, Dempsey would beat him, Louis too. Walcott would have a good shot, Marciano and Frazier definitly. Foreman would bomb him out, Holmes would outbox him and Lewis would KO him.
You're correct that his technique declined significantly during that timeframe. D'Amato was gone and he'd gotten rid of Rooney (a D'Amato) disciple. I think without that head movement that he became much more beatable. He'd have a punchers chance against anybody, but I think post-Spinks, most Top 10-15 Heavyweights all time would be favored against him.
Johnson and Jeffries wouldn't stand a chance. They'd both get blown out. Technically, both are less gifted in the modern era than people like Carl Williams and Frank Bruno. They are exceptional physically, but that would not be enough. Both get stopped quickly. Dempsey is the same, but less so. His style was more suited, but he still did a lot of things that wouldn't work in the modern era. His guard, for instance. He does slightly better but loses within 5. I don't think Walcott has a chance either. He'd get blown out in no time.
