"They're competent good boxers, but they're not necessarily entertainers." Agree or disagree? :think Many of yesteryears teachers like Eddie Futch, Cus D'Amato and Gil Clancy viewed boxing as more than just a sport, it was also an art of entertainment, whereas many of todays trainers focus solely on winning.
Right on the money. The haye klit fight is as good as it gets for todays heavyweight fights and even that is mediocre
Its like watching Tim Duncan from the San Antonio Spurs. Excellent ball player with great fundamentals, but absolutely nothing entertaining about the guy.
Agreed, they are all missing the aura like Tyson had around him. Tyson was a scary mofo, someday again hopefully there is someone that gifted in the HW division. Its the most boring division in boxing by far right now, but there are some good fighters, albeit very few. At some point though it will be exciting again, just need that one guy like Tyson to draw attention to it.
If they want the mega $, you got to create a buzz, the excitement...But, I think that has more to do with the style the fighter and/or trainer are drawn to or practice rather than doing things just for the excitement value... Cus' loved that style and found a young, mean sob that fit it perfectly...Ali naturally did it, same with Tyson, Foreman, Dempsey, etc...
These old heavyweights did entertain more but to think that they did it purposely for the audience is ridiculous. They were brawlers and took incredible punishment, which suits for the fans but ruined their health in the process. Winning and money was equally important back then as it is today.
