Just read thru parts of 'Boxing has regressed' and a thought of Mike Tyson as trainer came up. I understand that he has distanced himself being involved in Boxing as of now but I guess as a student of the game he must have a lot of knowledge and techniques to pass on. Most great trainers from the past are now gone as to who is going to give the next generations these old teachings? Thoughts?
He might be good. I think he's making more doing other things though. Movie appearances, broadway gigs, signings, Mike is making more than people think with all this.
mike approached freddie roach a few years ago about working as a trainer at the wildcard and roach turned him away. terrible mistake imo. tyson has a wealth of knowledge and experience. he was in boxing college under cus d'amato. he had access to the largest fight film library in existence because his managers at the time, bill clayton and jim jacobs, owned that library. mike studied all the greats.
source? if that's true that was probably the biggest mistake roach has made. I doubt its true though, why would you deny mike?
He's a crazy person. So no. Plus, boxing has been bad for him - he needs to get as far away from it as possible IMO.
Its true. Roach didnt turn him away because he wouldnt be a good trainer. He didnt want all the attention mike would bring. Thought it would be distracting
Generally people who are really good at something make terrible trainers. They are particularly gifted, so when their students, who are not as blessed, can't seem to get things right away, it's too frustrating.
I dunno if he's emotionally capable of being a succesful trainer but he definitely has more knowledge about the science of the sport than just about anyone. Him and James Toney are the biggest students of the sport imo but both ****ed in the head. Maybe they'd be better as assistants who come in offer advice and tweak things. Could you imagine a gym ran by Tyson and Toney, it would be ****ing scary going in there, you'd never know when a loose cannon would go off.
