“I think the heavyweight scene is pretty good right now,” Tyson said. “The Klitschkos are doing great. It’s not their fault that there is not enough competition. But I don’t buy the idea that today’s fighters are not as good as the old fighters. If you had asked Joe Frazier if he could beat me when I was at my best, he would have said, ‘hell, yes,’ That’s the way boxing goes.

“I think I could beat the next generation of fighters but the reality of history is that the fighters get better and better, bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger. I was bigger than Rocky Marciano and I was not even one of the big guys in my generation.”

Bigger does not mean better. It never has and it never will.

    That's true.

There are lots of big guys who aren't that good, just look at Fields, Julius Long, etc... and even those guys would wipe the floor with many other big fighters.

But, big + extremely skilled + intangibles = great.

Having faster hands doesn't mean you are automatically better either, but it's an advantage

Mike's a clever guy when he wants to be.

Top level (top 1, 2 or 3) in pretty much any sport is improving over time. The lower level fighters is another issue.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The Heavyweight division gets away with it a lot with the Klitchsckos beating on smaller guys, even guys that are decent or good as Adamek.

So he's basically saying the HW division and it's fighters are:

    1. "pretty good"
    2. on average stronger, bigger and better than classic fighters

    :deal:deal:deal

Oh that must hurt coming from your idol Mike Tyson. Can't wait for half a dozen guys with black & white Tyson avatars to break out in tears.

    Except it kinda does.

Thats why we have weight divisions and how the heavyweight division has nearly always been domninated by fighters who are bigger than the vasy majority of their opponents.

Louis was bigger than nearly all his opponents
Ali had height and reach over most fighters.

Liston was considered a beast in his his prime.

Even though Tyson may have been short, his physicque was a lot more developed than nearly all his opponents in the 80s. The musculature was way in advance of most fighters at the time. If you look at his 80s fights,he may have been giving away a few inches, but he was about the same weight as his opponents if not heavier.

The last 20 years of heavyweight boxing has been pretty much dominated by guys who are 6'5 plus and 240 plus.

    Bowe
    Lewis
    The 2 Klitschkos.

The reason Vitali beat Adamek pillar to post isnt because he such a better fighter than Adamek, it was mainly because he was 6 inches taller and 40lbs heavier.

If Chambers and Wlad were the same size, im sure Chambers would have been able to outskill and speed Wlad, but they werent and so Wlad dominated him.

Weight and height have always been an advantage in boxing.

Im glad Mike is able to underdtand the notion of athletes and sportsd in general improving over time.

I think some people here need to understand this.

boxing changes over the years, just as every sport does

but it's impossible to say how Ali or Fraizer would do against Johnson, Marciano, Klitschko, or Schmeling, every one of them represented a different era in the sport

I disagree with Mike that today's fighters are better, bigger maybe, stronger, maybe, but it's impossible to say if they're better, each era of boxing had fighters with different styles

if you want to check that, play Fight Night or any other boxing game and you'll have your answer to whether today's boxer are better than classic fighters

Mike realises what most athleets do.

That over time, athletes and sports improve as training habits,,science, nutrition etc. improve.

You cant compare tennis players,or soccer players of the 50s to todays players, yet for some reason many boxing fans seem immune to this logic.

Fighters of different eras should not be compared to each other. Their acheivements should be,but not literally head to head.
