That's a very shallow way to look at things. Thomas in particular had a great string going and many thought he could decision an aging Holmes particularly after he beat Witherspoon in such impressive fashion. Just because Holmes missed them doesn't mean they have to be thrown out to the dump in an attempt to save face for Holmes.

This is a much better argument and I appreciate that, John.

But look at how many top 10 contenders, ex- and future champs Holmes beat.

Maybe, but do you rate Thomas, Dokes, or Coetzee with...oh...Norton?

I also didn't think Thomas defeated Witherspoon that impressively.

Holmes beat a lot but honesty has to prevail in how he treated the title post Witherspoon in his latter reign. Those entrenched deeply enough in the 80's (without bias) will remember.

How i rate them with Norton (an aged Norton) doesn't count for anything. None of the three were anywhere to be seen when Holmes fought Norton. Holmes beating Norton doesn't mean he doesn't have to fight other top of the tree contenders years later because Norton might be thought of more highly than them. We don't give automatic free passes outside the ring one has to beat them inside it. Well that's how i see it.

Thomas beat Witherspoon far more easily than Larry did just a year later. Given how highly so many rate Witherspoon Thomas comfortably beating him at his best has got to impressive to say the least.

I think Frazier was more of a warrior minded guy, yet Mike was more two handed. It is hard to compare. I vote for Mike being higher. From 1986 to 1989 he was hard to beat. His prime was so short. The heart of Frazier always helps his ranking.

That's cause he was a lot better than Frazier and nobody could do that to him in his prime.

That's cause he was too good in his prime and never had to.
Tyson would have whipped the floor with anyone that Frazier or Holmes faced.

The top five champs of the 80s were these guys:
    1. Tyson
    2. Holmes
    3. Spinks
    4. Witherspoon
    5. Thomas

Tyson beat the crap out of three of them and also beat the guy who had just knocked out the other one. Holmes (barely), Spinks, and Thomas only beat one. Witherspoon beat zero.

Throw in Tucker, who was h2h good enough to make that list, and it looks even better for Mike.

Don't be ridiculous, Tyson wouldn't stop Ali in 10 tries.
