Just watching this video, i always enjoy watching the post fight interviews and comments. Interesting comments around 05:55 mark onwards. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcLqEh_4v3I&feature=related[/ame]
Tyson was an astute and humble analyst of fights. Look at the credit he gave Buster after he got splattered by him. Despite his ferocious and often crass bravado, Mike knew his boxing more than most.
He also knew Douglas was a fraud and their fight was a fluke. The commentators here confirmed it. All this bull**** about Tyson backing down to people who stood up to him came in more recent years. Everybody at that time thought the fight was a fluke
He only looked good cz "my boy" was sloppy. What happened when Douglas fought someone in shape? he got his clock cleaned.
Of course the chiseled 220 pound Tyson wasn't in any kind of fighting shape but the 246 pound slob that was Douglas against Holyfield shows him at the peak of his abilities.
He must have been in some shape to take the battering that he did. In the post-fight comments it is also mentioned that an in-shape Douglas vs Holyfield would have been an entirely different fight.
C'mon, you guys all know Tyson wasn't at his best for Douglas. Anyways, Douglas wasn't at his against Holyfield either and Tyson knew he would lose. Douglas took the money and ran. Unbelievable that Tyson never got his rematch.
He was the undefeated champion who showed guile and heart, even at his worst. My god it's been documented for over 20 years now how badly Tyson prepared for the fight.
Tyson is a great fighter with a proven granite chin, he wasnt just going to lie down for Douglas. He also took his lumps in ALL of his fights. Tyson showed his heart in this fight because despite getting his ass kicked and being out of shape, he tried his best. An inshape Douglas Vs Holyfield would ahve just lasted a few rounds longer
Have you guys ever watched Hopkins vs Mercado II? Commentator asks Tyson if Hopkins will KO Mercado. Tyson says he doesn't like predicting fights
A bit off topic. Im watching Holy-Moorer 2 right now, man MM seems out of shape and he seemed scared of Holyfield. Holyfield was extremely aggressive in this fight
This was the Douglas that I always expected when I watched him fight. It was surprising to see him rise from the canvas like he did in Tokyo. He usually quit in all his fights when he faced hard resistance. I agree with Pacheco though Douglas was a very nice guy and could have remained marketable had he continued fighting. Instead he went into hiding in Florida and gained 200 pounds.
Moorer was far from scared but he was definitely in poor condition. That was the way to fight Moorer because he never had great footwork and liked to fight at a slow plodding pace at heavyweight. The fighters that pressured him usually created an exciting fight. See Cooper and Botha fights.
