This came to my mind after reading the "Marvis Frazier?" thread, but I didn't want to hijack it with this query.

I will preface by indicating a possible answer to my query -- youthful exuberance. I would never be able to do that at any age, let alone in my late teens!

It seemed like Tyson was uncharacteristcally pumped after that KO. Was there a lot of hype surrounding the fight; was it the presence of Joe Frazier in the opposite corner (who someone indicated was also really pumpeD)? It looks like an electric crowd.

I guess I was used to seeing Tyson looking more ho-hum (almost humble) after a dynamic KO, like he expected it to happen so it was no big thing. Seeing him extra pumped, just stood out to me.

  2. Gr8 Question , m8. Tyson did destroy tht blaoke like a sack of ,
    potatos.

I Do Beleve Marvis Was bein hyped up QUITE A BIT ,
    Marvis was 1 talented f8her , however i do beleve ,
    tht He Did Not ever
    have 1 chin 2 ever beat , some1 like mikey .

Marvis 's conection to 1 Real Fighter (Joe Frazier) was most ,
    likely 1 reason for his-,
    reaction .

Tyson could be a fruit cake post fight. Post Ferguson he talked of the importance of catching the tip of the nose, so he could drive the bone [sic] inside the brain.

The Frazier win made Tyson seemingly prove he was for real. But it should be remembered a week before the bout, the Berbick fight was a betting pick'em.

And to be honest, I thought Berbick was the slight favourite, even if the odds on Tyson tightened up nearer to the fight (Tyson was 1/5 going in).

He hurt Frazier with his set-up punches. He was just such a fast starter, hard for many good boxers to live in that ring with him in the early goings.

I've seen that fight several times -- didn't really make the connection where he does that two-handed gesture (like why did you send this mortal to me). It looks like Rooney tells him not to do it -- though seems to be laughing a bit about it himself as he tells him that.

i remember watching the fight live with my dad on abc inm. marvis had just had a few fights with greg page and looked good. and being smokin joe's boy he got rushed along too quick. had marvis been handled right probly wouldve done better, he was a much better fighter than rememberd. as far as the reaction if my memory serves right he wa the 1st fighter that alot of the experts were picking against tyson. i remember in our group is was about 50/50 on who wins. so probly a sense of proving alot of people wrong is why

Joe forced his own style onto Marvis and Marvis paid the price. He should have stuck to being a technical boxer. Still, it wouldn't have helped him against Tyson

Frazier Jr should never have been allowed in the ring with Tyson.

I think Tyson had some resentment of Marvis.

Marvis earned a payday of $250,000 to $300,000 while Tyson made £200,000 to $250,000. Marvis largely had that earning potential gifted to him through his father's name, the perfect incentive for a guy like Mike to get right royally pissed off.

Marvis was cocky - coming into the ring in light pink shorts, I think everything about him would put Tyson's back up.

I asked my Dad about this earlier, he thought that Marvis's entourage had a reputation for giving it the big one, and that there'd been trouble in London when he fought Funso Banjo caused by his entourage. He seemed to think something similar had happened in the build up to the Tyson fight, with Marvis's entourage making their 'presence felt'; pissing off Tyson.

After the slightly manic celebration, Tyson did go over to both Joe and Marvis and paid his respects, he even kissed Marvis on the cheek and seemed generally very warm towards both men.

I'm happy to again bring up the soon to be published book about Marvis Frazier's life, this time in reference to the Mike Tyson fight. I've been told by a good source that there is a chapter in the book covering this fight (of course!) and the very issue of Mike Tyson's reaction at the end of the fight is part of that chapter. Don't forget that Mike Tyson has said that before nearly every fight he would worry that maybe this was the guy who was going to beat him. No doubt he had those concerns about 16 & 1 Marvis Frazier. Anyway, check out the Meet Marvis Frazier website and Facebook page and watch for the release of a very interesting book. Thank you, jpowerspotter
