I am in the middle of reading, John Duncan's In the Red Corner (a Journey into Cuban Boxing) (I am on page 218) so please, do not spoil it, if you have read the book). Although there are a number of glaring basic factual mistakes, he (Duncan) is putting foward a fair story. His task, was to try and get the Cuban authorities (on Frank Warren's behalf) to agree to a Savon/Tyson match up. But even half way though the book, he has already given up, but has got some good one to one interviews with Cuban boxing's big names of the late 90s time period. So if Duncan had succeed, does anyone see Savon beating Tyson in 95/96, under amateur rules?
Possibly. With head gear and bigger gloves, any savvy boxer would have a shot against that version of Tyson. He wasnt the greatest amatuer when he was one. His style always favored the pro game at that point in his career he was more of a headhunting one shot banger.
