Read this article about Paul Spadafora's alcoholism: http://old.post-gazette.com/pg/05058/463277.stm

How is it possible to be an elite athlete, win world titles and use drugs or alcohol?

Certainly these guys declined, but they had good years, as well.

    Any thoughts?

I guess you get away with it for a while but ultimately it shortens your career.

The human body is quite amazing. But it kicked them all in the ass at some point.

Carlos Ortiz was also an alkie, and Roberto Duran, if not an alcoholic, loved to drink.

Some people are just freakish athletes, but you can only get away with it for so long.

The athletic life and diet counters some of it and cleanses the liver but utlimately it is self destruction

But maybe drinking isn't that bad for you? Europeans drink wine each day and are healthy.

Monzon used to smoke while running iirc. Duran was into drinking and coke.

I'd be more surprised if a fighter didn't have some destructive vices like that. Boxing itself is one. It's part of that personality profile.

A glass of wine each day will definitely affect elite athletic performance down the road.

They lived the rockstar lives man. Crash and burn. Today its more about living longer making wiser choices. Tho it can be quite humorous to listen to former greats bumbling their opinions in the Mexican channels during fights, you just hope they take it easier on the liver. I seen several fighters trying to break the habit, but family, friends, and fans keep offering them drinks makes it harder to say no. Rare when they actually do.

Crack is the fountain of youth. Look no farther than Oliver McCall and Antonio Tarver.

I don't know how some people do it. I have guys I train with that will go out drinking all night long and be bossing it in the gym the next day. I even so much as sniff some alcohol and don't get my 8 hours sleep and I feel like I've been on a stag weekend in Vegas.
