"I am pretty disillusioned with boxing. I watched some boxing last night," he replies in his faint, lisping voice. "There's no excitement (...) It doesn't have the character. Every part of entertainment needs a character. It is more than being very skilful in boxing. You have to have a personality. Boxing doesn't have a personality."

~ Taken from an article written by Geoffrey Macnab from 'The Guardian' today.

Now, a lot of people are going to say that 'Mayweather' has an exciting personality, but I have news for you -- he doesn't. He never has had anything close to the kind of magnetic appeal Tyson has in mind. When I think of true 'character' in the sport, I think of Jack Johnson, Ali, Naseem Hamed, and Tyson himself. These are the kind of guys that the sport is sorely missing today, and this is why the sport is lacking that vital spark right now.

I bet if Mayweather would weight 220pounds, rapes a girl goes to prison and refuses to go to Iraq he would be a "character"

I agree, Boxing really has lost it's enertainment value over the years, you not only have to have good and exciting fights in the ring, but you must have some type of mic skills to get the average guy's attention, a gimmick if you will. I still believe thats part of the reason the Heavyweight division is so unpopular, none of these guys have anything interesting to say, Haye might be an exception once he starts fighting top guys.

Where's the ****ing rage, if not that, at least come with a good gimmick, something to sell. Old Foreman- was the good guy, who fought for the guys who were middle aged, Tyson- had the rage, funny, appealed to everyone, white or Black, old or young. Bowe- Very likable, had a good sense of humor, always joking around. Morrison- Appealed to the average white guy, was good looking enough for the ladies as well. Holyfield- The classic over achiever, the guy that was hard to wish against, everyone loves a warrior/underdog. The list goes on, the Heavyweights now adays have neither the talent or the personality to get the average guys attention anymore.

DLH and Mayweather still broke all PPV records, you can't do that if you lack "Character" and BOTH fighters need to have it to break all PPV records which they did. So I can't really agree with Tyson(my favorite fighter all-time) here.

Good points - what people don't realize is that the 'popularity' of the sport lives and dies with the heavies. And there have been very few characters in the HW ranks over the last few years.

That's correct. As good as Lennox Lewis was, he never had that appeal that Tyson had, and although most people blame the demise of the HW division on his departure, it really began when Tyson stopped being a strong player inthe division.

Boxing doesn't get much ink in the tabloids since Tyson left. It used to be all about Brittney, Paris, Anna Nicole and Mike.

I think boxing did not like the company he was keeping.

Exactly P4P GOAT, I'm a fan of boxing no matter what, but even I myself would like to see a fighter say or do something shocking every once and awhile. Why do you think Tyson still sold out crowds well past his prime? It's because he had a great gimmick, just like Foreman did when he got back into boxing in 1987, in his late 30's. These guys not only had the true boxing fans watching them, but they also made the average guy at the bar take notice as well, thats whats missing, and it's a big part of the reason Heavyweight boxing gets less media coverage than Tennis anymore.

If your comparing Floyd to Tyson then your right there is no comparison but you also have to remember even in his time, not even the best well known fighter compared to Tyson as far excitement and draw , Mike Out shadowed Ray , The hit man , Duran , Marvolus , so I think to much of it when some say there no excitement in boxing today..

Touché. **** Tyson's opinion, the sport doesn't need more rapists or boxers that are stupid enough to blow the millions that idiot has blown over his career.
