    Exactly.

Boxing doesn't need "characters", all it needs is talent. And there is plenty of talent. Maybe there isn't depth of talent at HW, but that isn't the only division in boxing.

Those that agree that it is boring - that's fine, stick to MMA and WWE. There are plenty of "characters" there.

We'll welcome you back with open arms when you get tired of the smoke and fireworks.

Boxing is gets its money from having fighters the people love. If you think boxing doesn't need talented "characters" you are mistaken. You can have the greatest home in the world, greatest invention since creation, but if you can't sell it, it is worthless.

Boxing needs better ambassadors than Floyd, and I like Floyd as a boxer, Mayweather's gimmick is weak as hell. I think the best part about him is that he brings his father and uncle into the limelight and those guys are the real "characters" I think once Oscar retires the money boxers get is going to take a huge bomb.

    Not a chance.

It may not have gained short-term "Sports Illustrated" popularity in the late-80s/early-90s, but it would still be around make no mistake.

    Is Oscar a "character"?

He's the sport's biggest money-spinner, and is as bland as the colour beige.

Floyd was boxing from early childhood. If Tyson never existed, Floyd would still have emerged.

We'll just see about your last comment. I remember people saying the exact same thing when both Ali and Ray Leonard were near the end of their careers. Tyson and Holyfield have faded away without having much of an impact. We'll just see.

At least he brought excitement and agressive boxing to his fights..
The average man on the street knew who the champ was. Not like today with that boring, scared armslapping disgrace of a champ who is on the throne now.....

I don't really know what Tyson is talking about. We're practically in a golden age right now. Maybe the heavyweight division is in trouble but this year alone we've had classics like Pacquiao-Marquez II and Vasquez-Maarquez III with Cotto-Margarito coming up. And 2007 was one of the strongest boxing years in recent memory.

Those "average man on the street" fans only ever watched Tyson's fights. They knew nothing about the sport. And once Tyson faded, they immediately jumped ship to MMA.

**** them. Boxing doesn't need them. They boosted Tyson's bank account (which he then threw away). Nothing more.

    SHUT THE **** UP !!!

floyd has good personality.... the problem is his style of boxing does not match that personality....

and dont say anything about him needing to change his style cause his style is the most sensible....

hit the most and dont get hit in the process

I don't agree with your assessment of how much of a magnetic personality that someone like Bowe was.

How was Riddick Bowe any more interesting, when interviewed, than Lamon Brewster or Wladimir?

I agree with Punisher in that an interesting personality is importnat to becoming a popular fighter, but it sounds as if you want to turn boxing into the WWE. Regardless of personality and what rediculous things Tyson used to say when interviewed, his main appeal was his destroyer ring performance.

Make no bones about it. Tyson, as effective as he was in the ring, would have been just as popular, had he been a quiet reserved person when interviewed. HIs ability to take people OUT in a few seconds is what made him famous........the run ins with the law merely created a secondary sideshow interest in him. But what he did in the ring was the reason why we still talk about him, today.

Boxing saved Tyson, not the other way around. Iron Mike would've been dead or in prison earlier & for longer if it weren't for boxing & Cus.

If it works in the ring, do it.

Once again, Tyson doesn't deserve anyone's sympathy. He blew millions on stupid **** like gold chains, white tiger cubs, a bunch of losers for a posse & cocaine. **** him, I'd like to have the chance to waste a 10th of what he wasted. Would you feel sorry for me?
