Why was Tyson able to destroy Spinks the way he did? Was it because Spinks was afraid, or was Spinks just tailor-made for Tyson?
Yes to both. The fight had a bit of a Liston-Patterson vibe to it. But then again, I put a few bucks on Spinks. He'd beaten everyone put in front of him, fights where I doubted him going in: Qawi, Holmes, Cooney. He always came through. But Spinks was as ripe for the picking (age, fear, style) as Tyson was peaking and finely tuned.
Tyson catching Spinks early he may well have been caught cold but Michael Spinks at his best was a boxer who had good movement laterally and footwork. He had lots of knee issues that weren't getting any better, it wasn't by any means the best version of him in there Tyson would always try and jump on the opponent early he did that night to devastating effect. No doubt he was at that time a perfect opponent for a prime Tyson.
Tyson was that good. After he became undisputed champion by outpointing Tucker he knocked out Tyrell Biggs in 7 rounds, destroyed Larry Holmes in 4, Tubbs in 2 in a ferocious display and then annialated Spinks in 90 seconds he was unstoppable at that time.
I think the swift and abrupt ending came from a variety of factors. One of them that I’ve always suspected was that Spinks simply wasn’t there to fight. Not that it would have mattered much anyway but regardless, he wasn’t in it to win or retain any titles.
A few factors. Spinks was injured, old, inactive, a slow starter, petrified, and styles heavily favored Tyson
Those are the fighters he beat at that time, excellent men and he destroyed them easily. Best ever are only your words bud.
This for sure, but to be completely forthright, I saw the fight the day it happened and Spinks was looking beaten before he started. There was this look in his eyes....he didn't want to be there. But yeah, Michael didn't have a chance to get any kind of groove started. Truth be told I don't think there was ANY heavyweight at the time that would have lasted much longer against Mike. I think only a handful of ATGs would have withstood it, and only on their very best day. Mike was King that day.
For those claiming Spinks cashed out and then laid down, this analysis reveals Spinks was adequately prepared. One should be when trained by the great one Eddie Futch. This content is protected
Fight ended when the always theatric Butch Lewis questioned Tyson about his gloves......Inciting a man that did not need to be incited. Spinks already had his glory---motivation may not been his biggest asset even though he appeared in shape. Always confuses me when trainers or any athletes fan the flame of their opponents. I guess I am just old. Maybe Lewis should have learned the psychological lessons of Hearns and Hagler [ what not to do} And Leonard textbook { What was perfect strategy prefight planning}...But in general Spinks may have lasted a few more rounds
