30 years since Tyson v Bruno .What were your thought s going in to the fight? Did anyone give Bruno a realistic chance ?Was this the beginning of the end for the Baddest Man on The Planet in terms of Tyson not looking his best ,against someone he was supposed to crush ?
I get the impression that this was a bigger deal in the UK than it was here. It was just another Tyson fight to us stateside folks.
It was a huge deal over here in Britain and Bruno was really overrated then, but this was the start of Tyson`s decline, this fight was different from his previous bouts, he looked awful, his peek a boo style was missing and he was head hunting too much, the ending was a good combo though and proved the gulf in class between the two.
I don't think Bruno was overrated by the true boxing fans, they knew he had virtually no chance. With Bruno being a popular lad he attracted a lot of casuals who probably thought he did have a chance. I think the example of the true rabbit in the headlights was Spinks in Tyson's previous fight. I think Bruno generally fought ok in the circumstances and was up for it, when up against the then wrecking machine.
I think ur right Cecil ,Bruno fought him the best way he could .Yes ,no doubt he was nervous going in ,Who wouldn't be !,but he didn't just curl up in a ball .And he did manage to slightly rattle Tyson I believe .
Yep it was a massive overhyped fight over here.I don't recall any Brit sports writers actually picking Frank to win ,just that he was a big puncher and in with a Puncher's chance .Which of course was never going to be enough ,single shot's wouldnt stop Tyson that we do know .But at the end of it Bruno came out sort of a hero over here .He'd been stopped but was still on his feet ...
If you had told a boxing fan back then, that in the year 2019 three of the top five heavyweights in the world would be British, they would probably have laughed at you!
Bruno hurt him with one big punch. Tyson has proven he can take his licks. No version of Bruno beats Tyson.
So right! Frank was our best heavyweight for years and by 1990 it looked as if he was finished. That was the UK's heavyweight boxing scene then ,so if a crystal ball had said that I'd have p***ed myself laughing!
The memory is quite hazy, but I do recall in the build up in the UK there was a lot of talk about whether Bruno would make it out of the first round,or even get seriously hurt. Tyson was coming off the demolition of Spinks, and his aura of invincibility was probably at its zenith. The brutal losses to Bonecrusher and Spoon were still fresh in people's minds, and however you chewed up the data the end result was a quick Tyson win. I don't think many gave Bruno much of a chance, in contrast to the second fight where a vocal minority bought into the hype. Tyson showed vulnerability in the fight. Not so much in getting stung by Bruno, who was a big puncher, but more in that he seemed to neglect the jab and march forward in straight lines throwing trying to land the bomb. The early flash knockdown may have worked in Bruno's favour a bit. It brought out some of his primal instincts, and he fought a pretty dirty fight with rabbit punching and trying to rough Tyson up in the clinch (as opposed to the second fight where he just held for dear life). Tyson for his part was probably lulled into a false sense of security, thinking he could just walk through Bruno. Regardless, as much as a nation listening on radio lost their **** when Bruno wobbled Tyson, the result was never seriously in doubt.
I was 14 and listened to the fight on the radio. Remember wanting Bruno to do the unthinkable but knew it was a futile task. In the end the nation was proud he lasted 5 rounds and gave it a go. In hindsight it really was the start of Tyson’s post-Rooney decline.... 30 years though? ducking hell
I remember it like this also and I was 12-13, I didn`t listen on the radio though I watched it the next day when it was shown on regular TV after being live on Sky, not many people had Sky back then!
