did this fight ever come close to happening. imn surprised tyson never tried there hardest to get in there and get this fight on. a win for tyson would of phased lewis out of the picture. the lewis tyson fight may never have tyson couldnt be relied on to retain the title for long.we would of probably gone back to hw division of the mid 90s were no one knew who was best and it would be all mixed up what are your predictions and would our perceptions of tyson and lewis be a lot different now i fancy tyson in 5
Tyson tried to make the fight, and I think Rahman wanted it, but the rematch clause saw Lewis knock him out instead. I think Tyson would've kayoed him before round 6.
When Rahman KO'd Lewis, offers came in from all over. Don King wanted to sign Rahman to fight David Izon in China, I believe, and Shelly Finkel was thisclose to getting the Tyson-Rahman championship fight. Without the rematch clause Tyson would have gotten the shot.
Yeah, Tyson would beat him. He still had his punch and if he tried he would get Rahman out early too. Rahman´s chin and defense was just to weak. On the other hand he didn´t get knocked out by Tua. If he played his cards right, stay away from Tyson early and tried to box him, survives the first few rounds he may be able to win a decision. Anyway, I take Tyson in 4.
Tyson is all wrong for Rahman and a class above so it doesn't matter he was past prime. If Lennox then fights Tyson he probably gets far more plaudits and although Tyson's team may avoid Lennox they may also think Lennox was done based on the first Rahman fight. If he avoids Lewis though and Jones beats Ruiz a Jones-Tyson fight may have come off and I think even a past it Tyson would be all wrong for Jones
Rahman was not much good but by 2001 Tyson was finished. At the time I thought Rahman would take him, and I still hold the same view now. I thought he was forced to turn down all other deals by Lewis's lawyers. Lewis had some sort of rematch clause or option on Rahman and was enforcing it. That's why Rahman said he was acting like a *****, or "in a gay manner", and they had that studio brawl episode.
It depends...Rahman does beat the Flabby Rusty Zombie Tyson who fought Nielsen in 2001. However, i think Tyson would be motivated for this fight, train to be on the form he was for Golota, & destroy Rahman in a one-sided 3 or 4 round slugfest. The side-stepping & headmovement would make Hasim miss frequently, & he would make the much slower man pay by countering & beating him to the punch. There are hugely significant differences between this Tyson: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfGBsU-psrY&[/ame] And this Shot Overweight Corpse: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-KjhQd_t5M&[/ame]
I think you people are over-estimating the post-Holyfield versions of Tyson. Tyson didn't do anything after 1996, except for act the fool. He was in his post-bite "mad mike" persona stage, as moody and as unsure of himself as ever, and fighting 2nd-raters and 3rd-raters. He was being kept alive in boxing terms mainly by Lennox Lewis's greed and need to fight him. Golota was a terrified bum. It doesn't take much to put Golota into mental meltdown. I certainly don't rate Rahman's skills as a fighter, but I'll say this : he didn't scare easy. If anything, Tyson would be the one intimidated. It was years past the point where Tyson could even pretend he really wanted to be fighting. Rahman was a big strong young heavyweight with a stiff enough punch and enough attitude to do away with the 2001 version of Tyson.
Tyson in 5 would have been an accurate prediction if Tyson had been in his 1986/88 pomp. The 2001 version, however, would have lost to Rahman. Mike would have started out pretty well, then gassed out after two or three rounds. More like Rahman in six or seven.
The Tyson that showed up against Cliff Etienne would have killed Rahman. Rahman was too slow and engaging and would have probably wound up in a fight just like Etienne did as soon as Tyson started coming forward. No way does Rahman fight a disciplined fight and I dont care what he did against Tua, because Tua didnt bring the same type of pressure Tyson did. Tua would come forward but not with the speed and brawling tactics Tyson did even towards the end of his career. Tua could be tamed into a boxing match with simple lateral movement, whereas Tyson was always looking to get inside and close.
Yeah Rahman really blew it signing with King, he fell for the old cash in the duffle bag trick that King fooled so many fighters with. Rahman had zero chance of fighting Tyson because he had a contract with Lewis so he had to fight him again.
He must have thought he could re-negotiate a higher price after beating Lewis again. But weren't his next 4 fights with HBO anyway ?
