Tyson v Spinks - Who was THE champ....?

    Prior to these two meeting in 1988,if a gun was put to our heads,who would we have said the defending title holder was ? Spinks was the linear champ. The man who beat the man. To counter that,Tyson held the WBC,WBA and IBF belts,and had beaten more contenders than Spinks had during the previous two years. One one hand,traditionaly a champion can only lose his title in the ring. On the other though,Spinks had vacated the IBF bauble,in order to avoid Tony Tucker and have an easier,but more financially lucrative bout with Gerry Cooney. Thoughts ?

    This topic was done to death very recently in a thread titled "who was the youngest heavyweight champion - Tyson or Patterson ?", or something like that.

    Done to death, absolutely fried.

    Anyway, I said Spinks.

    I say Tyson its up to spinks if he vacated his crown at the end of the day tyson unified the 3 titles then laid spinks out so it doesnt really matter.

    I disagree, if it doesn't really matter, then why bother with having boxing world titles?

    Spinks was the linlal champ and Tysonwas the true champion of the HW's. Spinks lost his claim when he signed to fight Cooney far as I'm concerned

    That makes sense,Bollox. If Spinks had been stripped,on the other hand,he'd have been THE man.

    You say in the first line Spinks was champ, then you say he lost his claim fighting Cooney...

    And how by the rules of lineage did Spinks lose his claim?

    :huh It is the lineage title, you lose it if you retire or lose a bout. Spinks did neither.

    Common sense dictated that Spinks was going to make more money fighting a Gerry Cooney rather than Tony Tucker, and it would probably of been an easier fight. That is a win/win situation.

    i mean because tyson won it didnt matter as he stayed champ but if spinks had won it would have been debatable whether or not he retained title or was a new champion.
