Dempsey said himself his absolute peak was Willard. He was impressive in every bout. As an example his comeback to ko leading contender Sharkey was awe inspiring. Yes he was being beaten by this top contender but the comeback is what ATG are made of. You can play that game with most any past hwt champion. Lots of criticism regarding Ali in his second reign. If you pick and choose article any picture can be painted. I lived through that era and the critical articles were not an accurate portrayal of the truth. It's just that in a free society writers write whatever they want to write and this may not reflect reality.
If you compare Dempsey with other ATGs of that epoch from other weight classes, the same writers were using superlative terms a lot more often.
Babe Ruth another 1920's superstar was also talked of in superlative terms he is still considered the best baseball player who ever lived. The heavyweight champion especially an ATG heavyweight champion alway gets lots of press. This is true in any era.
I'm talking about next-day reports mostly, not the 1950s or whenever BS poll that proclaimed Dempsey the greatest fighter of first half of the 20th century. Dempsey was criticized a lot more and praised a lot less than many other ATGs of that era, and for good reasons, by contemporary writers.
You fanboys ALWAYS take anything that comes out of the ******'s mouth as, as if it's from God himself (including his claims that he was past prime at the age of 23 ) So let me get this straight, when Tyson says he'd beat Louis, you guys repeat it endlessly, yet when he FLAT OUT ADMITS he'd lose to Dempsey, he's only being humble? Puge, your credibility disappears when you claim that anyone (which in this case, just so happens to be me) who thinks Dempsey would beat Tyson, is only capable of extreme bias. Is that why most people rank Dempsey higher than Tyson?
I don't remember Tyson ever saying he was "past his prime" at any stage...nor does anyone rational believe that...but if you watch the Douglas fight and say "Yeah, this is Tyson at his best!", then you're no more objective than any of his fanboys. No, I am saying that statements from boxers shouldn't be taken as an end all. Mayweather believes he's the greatest fighter of all time. Is that true? He said it. Ali said Tyson would beat him. Is that true? And while I agree with Tysons assessment of him against Louis, I don't think it's because HE said so. Well, since I find Dempsey to be absurdly overrated, I don't think my credibility disappears at all. Dempseys record and accomplishments in the ring don't equate into this mythical head to head monsters that his fans like to imagine. They don't.
How is a man born in 1966 past his prime in 1990? You failed to see my point. Because, YOU think he's overrated, nobody is allowed to say he beats Tyson without being biased? :huh http://www.boxinginsider.com/columns/ten-great-heavyweights-time/ http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...tyson-is-not-a-top-10-heavyweight-of-all-time http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/greatest/featureVideo?page=greatest110 http://www.***********.com/-top-25-heavyweights-all-time-top-ten--26161 Sorry, if you can't handle it.
Have you heard of the term "off-night"? People have them. Then illuminate me, what is your point? I don't care about the "Tyson fanboys" that you keep rambling on about. I don't take everything a boxer says as gospel. You're the one that does that, always. Well, it's really not possible to create an objective argument for Dempsey beating Tyson. Not only does he look inferior on film, but his resume is much worse too. Knowing you however, you'll keep on blabbering about the Douglas fight, glorify Dempseys blowout of Fat Jess and ignore how he ducked a race of fighters and how 3 out of 5 of his title challengers were beaten up by a middleweight who never got his rightful title shot either.
Dempsey was a tough SOB. Tyson past round 6 isn't anything to worry about. His only weakness in fact. Dempsey knew the bob and weave inside out. He would past Tyson's defense. I like Dempsey because he was an all around great fighter. Dempsey KO rd 11
At the age of 23, at their prime and being a 42-1 favorite? Figure it out genius. Got any examples? Just when I think you can't get any stupider you constantly surprise me.
