That's not the point. A very similar situation happened in Lewiston, Maine. Walcott wasn't counting when Liston was down. Another poster said something along the lines of "You can get be down for an hour. But if the ref's not counting, it doesn't matter." But for some reason, it doesn't apply to Liston? :huh:huh

Wow, you guys are a bunch of hypocrites.

Liston was not following the count the way Douglas was. Douglas was on a knee and looking right at the ref and got up l before the ref reached '10'. It was clear he could have gotten up a little earlier if he had to. If the ref counted out of rhythm with the timekeeper, it's on him. Anyway, the officials agree and Douglas correctly was ruled the winner. The Liston farce was just f_d up. The editor of Ring Magazine declared who the winner is. I mean, come on. The weak Maine Commision and the World body that sanctioned the fight, the referee, all screwed up. The ref didn't even begin a count. There were allegations Liston was taking a dive, etc etc etc.

Don King thought he could strong arm and pull a power play, and in this case, lost.

Douglas was looking at the ref and waiting for him to count to 9 before he got up. If the ref had been quicker in the count he would have got up quicker!

This debate reminds me of that scene in the film Spinal Tap when the guitarist says ' if we need to make it louder then this amp goes up to 11' and the interviewer says ' well just make 10 louder then'

Once again, that doesn't just automatically slow down the count. The ref wasn't counting at all when Liston was down. Another poster said "It doesn't matter if a fighter is down for an hour if the ref doesn't count it."
If anything, your post just proves my point even more.

Why in the hell most fans come up with that excuse for Tyson? Douglas was clearly able to get up when he wanted to. His eyes were perfectly clear and he followed the refs count. Buster that night put it all together and showed he was capable of so much more.

Bringing up one of the most farcical fights in boxing history doesn't prove anything. The two fights are in no way comparable. Douglas received a legit count from the ref and beat it. Liston never received any count from the ref and ended up being waved off on his feet because someone at ringside shouted to the referee that he had been down ten seconds. The Tokyo referee wasn't taking instructions from the editor of Ring magazine. Ali-Liston should have been a no contest.

I agree the Ali-Liston ending may have been wrong, and a NC may have been in order.

But, like you said, the endings of Douglas/Tyson and Ali/Liston are not really comparable. The circumstances were vastly different. Just because Douglas was not declared a ko loser, it does not follow that the same should have automatically applied to Liston v. Ali.

    This.

Buster did everything right, he followed the referees count and got up, what do some people expect?

Was he to declare himself KOd, was he expected to ignore the count and see where the time keeper was up too.

    Mike got beat end of.

Long count my ass, time any refs count and match it, you never will.

I remember Mike and his team at the PC, stopwatch and everything trying to prove they had won by KO and all arguing about the count.

Mike Tyson let himself down then, he is such a historian of the sport, he should have known better.

Take a look at boxings greatest knockouts with larry merchant where Mike is commenting, it is cringe worthy.

It's not fair. What should they have done? Said Douglas was KOd even though he was up before the ref counted to 10 (which is all he has to do) just to right a wrong from 26 years previously?

By the way, if Sonny took a dive as you say, why would he milk the count? Defeats its own purpose, doesn't it? What was Sonny thinking? "I know I'll go down and throw the fight and I won't get up till the count of nine. D'oh!"

It would have been a bit unfair on Ali, having his perfect record besmirched by a NC, through no fault of his own, though.

Which makes this whole thread a waste of time. Douglas won the fight fairly..Tyson fanatics need to get over it.

This is a different issue completely relative to the Tyson-Douglas fight. I do think this should have been scored a NC regardless of what it would have done to Ali's record. Justice is justice and this was fvcked up beyond belief.
