Tyson vs Douglass count

    You can clearly see when Douglass gets knocked down that the ref's count was
    behind the official doing the count ringside. Looks like Douglass should have been
    counted out. I've heard this for years but only recently have good footage of
    the fight from espn. Thought? How much controversy if any was there over this
    in 1990? Do you think Tyson deserved the win?

    douglas should not have been counted out. there is no controversy.

    the ref's count is the count. the only count. no count chocula. this is the only count that matters

    he got up, end of story. if the ref takes 20 minutes to reach the "9", sit on the ****ing canvas and recover for 20 minutes

    Any controversy over the count was disproved in a post-fight analysis that featured both Tyson and Douglas. Even Don King had the common sense to withdraw his appeal and admit Douglas's legitimate title win.

    Basically,

    the referee doesn't have to pick up the timekeeper's count
    the referee's count doesn't have to be exactly 10 seconds (very rarely is, more like 12 or 13 seconds)
    both men got a similar count from the referee
    Douglas was clear-headed enough to have gotten up earlier during the count, he simply took full advantage which shows he was only stunned but not finished off by the punch, while Tyson was complete out of it by the end which led to the referee stopping the fight.

    Just when you think boxing is dead, another 12 year old comes along with the Tyson/Douglas long count...

    OK, it is not very original (even in 1990), and for many of us, it is not really classic history. But kudos to them, at least they are trying, and who knows, they might be one day, as cynical as us...

    Been more of a fuss because of everything that was at stake and Don King was

    No controversy. As jarodz said the refs count is the only count. Dempsey-Tunney the same story.
