That is good to here, and welcome to the forum. You will notice I am a bit of a pompous arse, but I am quite prepared to be mocked, and indeed self mock.
Didn't Liston get counted out by the time keepers count instead of Jersey Joe Walcotts count in the second Ali fight? From memory Nat Fleischer told Joe to stop it as Liston had been down for longer than 10 seconds. If that's the case could Liston have made an argument for a premature stoppage and maybe a no contest result?
That's because Walcott was totally incompetent. Fleischer wasn't even the timekeeper. Liston did protest Walcott's officiating but ultimately Liston's own actions were more scandalous than Walcott's, whose terrible job was over-shadowed by the rest that went on during the fight.
There shouldn't have been any controversy... But it would have been interesting to see how Tyson's career would have played out without the Douglas scar on his record, had Octavian Moran counted Buster out.... My guess is that, THAT version of Tyson would have lost to Holyfield, but it would have been far less damaging legacy wise than having a defeat to Douglas.
bingo! :good i still have yet to see a fight stopped with a fighter having his mouthpiece backwards in his mouth. tyson was completely out of it.
What is next? Group hug? Back on topic .... Douglass' count has been discussed many times before and always ends in a "woulda, coulda, shoulda" trap Buster got up, Tyson didn't ... that's it
My stance on the counts, and all that goes with them, is this: Regardless of the number, Douglas stayed down with the ref's count, and its clear to anyone with eyes: He could have gotten up from 4 or 5, and didn't even need 9. Tyson needed his 9 to even attempt to stand, and got up in as bad a shape as any fighter has ever returned to his feet in. There you have it. They are entirely different scenarios. The referee's count is supreme. To argue that he was off, you enter a what if world asking, "what if he was on?" If he was on time, Douglas gets up. If he counts fast, Douglas gets up.
