I'm of the same opinion as yourself. Watched it a few times now and more I see of it the more I can see how Tyson was doing so much better in this. He looked sharper than the original fight, was connecting well and looked like he was up for it. There were no signs of self doubt from Tyson, and yes Holyfield was definitely cramming his head in a heck of a lot from the early stages. Tyson was wrong to do what did, can't deny that, if he hadn't have snapped and kept on doing what he, then who knows what the out come would have been. It may have been his greatest success.
I just rewatched this and Holyfield would have flogged him. Tyson took the gutless way out for mine. Already he had no answer for Holyfield's spoiling tactics and Holyfield was neither intimidated nor ever in trouble. Tyson's few offensive surges were easily weathered. Tyson wasn't the boss in there and man he did not take that well. His frustrations were as much about Holyfield not being intimidated and having all the answers as they were about any dirty fighting. He was whining and moaning extremely early and playing the victim always looked very lame with Tyson. Look at the contrast in Holyfield. He cops a savage bite on the ear and is more than willing to fight on, in fact he was deadset keen. Can you imagine if Holyfield bit Tyson like that in this fight? He may have quit going by what we'd already seen. Holyfield would have fought on even after the second bite if he had to. Well he did for a bit. All the "come on" and staring and looking intense sure didn't fool Evander - it was all just false bravado. Tyson's frantic little "angry" spurts were easily shipped. So for me personally i think Tyson's effort in the rematch was pitiful. The way both combatants carried themselves across the two bouts (both mentally and physically) makes me doubt Tyson would ever have a serious chance against Holyfield irregardless of what stage their careers were at when they actually fought.
The bout would have ended similar to the first had not Tyson fouled out. Holyfield had an answer for everything Tyson was doing, Tyson was not taking control of the bout in any way. Had he won he would have had to exhibit intrinsic abilities he never showed at any other time in his career and as such unlikely.
Tyson was being outclassed in rounds 1 and 2. Round three he came out very agreesive but was not landing much. Just for his aggressiveness Tyson was on his way to winning round three when he fouled out. No real indication that the second bout would have ended any differently than the first. Tyson could not handle Holyfields skills and his refusal to be intimidated.
That's how Tyson tired to appear, like he was ready to beat Holyfield down and was confident of the win. If he was that confident then why bite again, knowing full well the fight would be stopped after being warned. Mike knew he was winning nothing that night so blew the whole thing up. There were others ways, he even got away with the ridiculous first bite but still decided to do it again after his point was made. As a fan i tried to defend it but no way to really.
