Tyson vs Tillis - who really won??

Ive got Tysons autobiography by Peter Heller and in it, after the Tillis fight both Cayton and Jacobs admitted that "Tillis was a mistake". They made a mistake by putting Tyson in the ring with Tillis, now whether this was because Tyson was still green or maybe because Tillis style was all wrong, thats open for interpretation.

I am slowly beginning to feel that Tysons power was slightly overated. He was hard hitting but not as Foreman or even a Tua or Morrison, what seperated him from this guys was his accuracy,sharpness and pinpoint precision, once that was gone, opponents seemed to last longer like Bruno, Ruddock, Douglas, Holyfield.

 

But Tyson was still better than them

 

Tua is a poor mans Tyson. He couldnt beat Tyson if Tyson laid down on the floor for him.

Old Foreman gets KTFO, he couldnt put away Holyfield, got outboxed by Morrison (who got Iced by Mercer) He got his face wripped open by Alex Stewart, who Tyson KTFO in the first round.

Probably because they were doing a great job of building Tyson up as a KO monster. They knew they needed to match him with a few credible opponents but still expected to see devastating KOs that could help build the image. Tillis ruined that. So did Green. After that they quicly matched Tyson with three easy set-ups, and the Marvis Frazier fight was exactly what they needed.

Cayton & Jacobs' build-up of Tyson was one of the greatest mangement and PR campaigns ever in pro boxing. Brilliant.

 

It was brilliant management, but it also prepared Tyson for what he would experience as a champion. There were quite a few movers in the top ten and he handled them all quite well.

 

Well, out of the 63 people who voted on this asinine thread only four voted for Tillis, that pretty much shows who the nutjobs are.

 

If anything it confirms the merits of the official decision, but to label all four of the dissenters as "nut jobs" is a little unfair. Many of us who voted for Tyson have called it a close fight and I thought choklab did a fair job of defending his scoring it for Tillis.

 

Well, they definitely "built up a gigantic Hype-Train by feedin' him bums", AND they used the montage tapes of him KOing those bums expertly in the build-up of the Tyson myth, but not everyone he beat prior to Douglas was a bum. Between the Berbick and Douglas fight he fought some genuine top fighters of the time.

 

Bruno wasn't much good.

 

I always felt that if Tillis COULD have beat Tyson that night. He did have a few mental lapses late in the fight that cost him the victory. If he won that fight, man would that have sent Tysons career in another direction.
