Tyson vs Tillis - who really won??

I agree with this. In fact had Tysons next fight had been a Tillis rematch I am certain Tyson would have won by hard knockout. Sometimes you get these fights where the better fighter just didn't yet know enough to respond in the right way to win enough rounds. He's capable of it, it's just one fight too early. On the night he let Tillis win too many rounds.

 

"Sufficient force" is the key words. How hard and how accurate is the staggering blow? A clear, clean blow on the target area with enough force to knock the head back is a scoring punch wether it's a jab or a wide hook.

Just touching won't count. Pity patty punches don't count, hitting the gloves doesn't count. If Tillis land two stiff jabs to a Tysons nose that Mike walks into and jerk his head back it's as good as two hooks that turn the head.

if nobody is staggering each other then the round goes to the guy who lands more often, controls the round and does more leading. A fighter can't take a round off and win that round in the hope he knocks the other guy out in the next round. He's not winning anything if the other man outboxed him.

Round 3 was a clear Round for Tyson. In that round he hurts Tillis who was unable to land enough clean blows to erase this. Tyson was able to trap Tillis, he unloads and lands so he's controlling that round, he's landing more punches and he hurts Tillis.

All Tyson did in round 4 was catch Tillis off balance to knock Tillis down with the last punch of that round. That's it. Tillis controlled every moment with his best work until then and landed hard hooks, uppercuts and right hands. The knockdown unfairly wins the round.

Round 6 was a round where Tillis did use light arm punches that land but all Tyson did was follow Tillis around, he scored with nothing clean himself. Tillis lands so that's a Tillis round.
Ordinarily these would not be scoring blows but in the absence of anything else this would count as "the most leading off".

Round 8 is a clear Tillis round. In fact Tyson gave away the last three rounds. Tillis did not win those rounds with pitty pat punches. He won them because Tyson gave them away. I think I heard Rooney say "be last" as apposed to "being first". He wanted Mike to catch Tillis leading, let him make the first move but it back fired because Tyson did too much waiting. Tillis would feint to the head and whip in hard body blows then claim him in a clinch. Tyson couldn't work that out at that time.

The commentators said at one point that it was scored by rounds, with points only used complementary in the event of a draw, so I'll score it round by round.

1: Even
2-4: Tyson
5-9: Tillis
10: Even

5-3-2 to Tillis.

I don't think it's absurd to give rds 1, 10 and even 7 to Mike, since he scored the biggest punches in those rounds, but I think it would do a disservice to Tillis's more consistent work. In fact, if I had to give rds 1 and 10 to anyone it would rather be Tillis. It was only late action by Tyson that made those rounds even close.

Tillis outlanded Tyson in every single round of the fight. And even though Tyson landed the most hurtful punches, Tillis landed quite a few hard shots of his own. He especially had frequent success with a left uppercut to the body that the commentators hardly mentioned even though it could well be a major reason as to why Tyson didn't press the attack more. To me, not only the crowd but also the commentators were quite biased.

EDIT: Thinking about it there is a case to give the rd 1 to Tyson on the grounds of effective aggression on top of the hard punches he scored late in the round, even though Tillis landed more punches. That would make it 5-4-1 to Tillis for me.

EDIT II: On one more viewing , rd 10 must go to Tillis. Tyson tried to steal it during the last 30 seconds, but too little too late on the whole. So 6-4 Tillis.

 

Yes, it was definitely scored in the old rounds system.

 

Tillis was in great shape for the fight.
I think he was in better shape than he'd been in for quite some time.

 

Yeah, he seems to have been very well prepared and also put in a maximum effort in the ring. A bit like his Douglas night, only Douglas put similar skills on the table but more size, strength and power.

 

An older Holmes but one who managed to shake off his ring rust and adjust to his older age.

 

Obvious Tillis won we saw shades of Ali in that fight. Tyson only won a round and was jabbed to death, he couldn't hit anything and made excuses of carrying Tillis an impossible guy for Tyson to defeat. What a mismatch and robbery that was if I ever saw one.

I loved Tillis and wanted him to beat Tyson but Tyson won fair and square. 7-3 or 6-4. Tillis fought a great fight and survived some serious punishment. You could tell Tyson was hurting him.

 

He was born......he was 1 yr old.

I saw the fight live on ABC. I wanted Tillis to win. Tyson learned a lot from this fight. It was the type of fight he needed. He needed someone to fight back. Tillis did and did much better than most expected.
