It was an “early” stoppage. Single knockdown where fighter gets up before the count. That isn’t strictly the same as “premature”. The ref was perfectly entitled to stop the fight when Williams didn’t respond properly. It’s not “controversial” in the sense that it was highly unlikely to have any meaningful impact on the result, which would almost certainly have been Tyson KO1 Williams regardless if it was after the first knockdown or the next.
I rewatched this fight - which is a good thing because it cleansed my eyes of my last corrupted vision of 58 yo Mike in there against Jake Paul. Williams arose at 8, still unsteady, leaning on the ropes. With and just after the ref’s question the fight was ultimately waved off 13 seconds from the time Williams first hit the deck. The ref’s question was “How do you feel?”. Williams did react facially with a look of “Well, you know, I just got cracked by Mike Tyson” - so he really didn’t look like he wanted anymore. Of course Neumann (ex boxer himself) also factored in Williams’ unsteadiness and glassy eyes. Some might still complain but the man in the middle at least prioritised looking after his own. Williams was doing okay until the KD but upon jabbing he held his right hand at his chest, not in a proper guard position - enter Mike’s hook - boom! Great example of Mike’s one punch power which even Mike has overly talked down, imo. Watching it again also reminded me of how Mike’s connected punches didn’t sound like anyone else’s - rather, they sounded similar to someone hitting a heavy bag with a baseball bat….scary! Prime Tyson doesn't get enough credit for his counterpunching ability. He dropped Williams with a BEAUTIFUL counter left hook.
Weaver knocked Williams silly, so it was just a matter of time before Mike did. Probably that same round lol.
One of my faves. The single shots that dropped Holmes, Golota and Botha are right up there for me also but the left on Williams might arguably take the honours. Again, all those punches sounded like a gun shot and the said fighters also fell as if they’d been hit by same. Power, speed and finesse make for a deadly combination (for further reference, see Joe Louis, also)
IIRC, Williams got up fairly quickly, probably wondering whether that was a good idea; thought about how he should respond to the ref for too long and took himself out of the fight. He probably could have continued in some capacity, but not for long and, in reality, he just didn't want to. Who could blame him?
it was a very good fight. I think that Carl dominated Weaver in the first round and felt too confident, forgetting about the power of Weaver's punch. I think that out of 10 fights he would have won 9. At that time, Carl was still very strong, he started to weaken significantly after the fight with Morrison, whom he had twice on the ground, but he couldn't finish it.
