The fight would have happened in 1987 had Witherspoon not lost his title a few months earlier to Smith. I've always found it odd how Witherspoon was in appaling shape for that fight and entirely disinterested, getting knocked out in the first round by a guy he had given a boxing lesson to 2 years earlier. Tim claims that the fight was fixed by King with whom he had contractual issues at the time, and I tend to agree. King wasn't putting his still teenage cashcow against one of the best the era had to offer yet. So imagine, 1987, a peak 220 pound Tim Witherspoon against Mike Tyson. How does this go? I'm thinking Tim could put up a Ruddock-esque effort, better than most of Tysons opponents at the time, except this time Tyson is at his best.
I believe he took a dive in that fight tbh. I feel Witherspoon would give Tyson nightmares, he was tough and had every punch in the book that would trouble Tyson including a great uppercut. If you get them both at 100% I think Witherspoon would stop him late.
I think if Witherspoon is in shape it is a very competitive fight. Tim would block a lot of shots. Tim didn't have a good enough jab and foot movement to keep Tyson on the outside all night. I think Tyson would get inside and be the busier fighter. I see a twelve round fight with Tyson winning a fairly close decision.
I don't think he would need to keep it on the outside, he had a great inside game. His defence was top notch and could slip Tyson's best shots. The one thing that could be a game changer was his great body punching. Tyson stated that Tillis hurt him bad with body shots, they also troubled him in the Holyfield fight.
Witherspoon admitted years later to throwing the Bonecrusher fight to get out of his contract with Don King. I believe an in shape Witherspoon poses all kinds of problems for Tyson. Tyson by close points win.
Exactly,....the fight would have ended just as brutally as did Tyson-Pink Thomas. Tyson would have eaten Timmy alive.
I think the Thomas who fought Tyson was close to shot, he had looked bad against Berbick and struggled with William Hosea - a mediocre clubfighter, before the Tyson fight. 1987 Witherspoon was better than 1987 Thomas. I don't think Tyson would be able to easily walk through Witherspoon like he did Thomas.
IF Tim had his head on straight, probably would lose a close UD or split decision to Mike.Mike would have hell and high water to deal with. If it was prime Witherspoon, Tim would pull off the upset late, or close UD.
I think the way to beat Tyson is on the inside and move him back. He might be the guy to do that but I doubt it. He doesn't have the speed to match Tyson and I see his stamina as an issue. I think it looks alot like Tubbs vs Tyson just lasts a bit longer
I see a very similar fight but I would expect Tyson to hurt him on the inside and stop him at some point (unless Tim went into complete survival mode).
Spoon at the top of his game was very dangerous. At his best which was hard to tell when that was he could give Tyson a very hard night possible loss .hard to hit fast for a big guy good chin(most of the time)devastating right hand good ring brain. Would be a big night.
It probably wouldn't be a classic. About halfway through Spoon would probably go into survival mode and lose a wide UD like Tucker.
