tossup between spinks and tucker.

spinks looks best on paper for obvious reasons, but tucker was probably marginally better than that spinks, being bigger yet also faster, with nearly as good skills. I would rate prime tony h2h far more of a handful for tyson than the other near-elites/elites Tyson beat spinks, smith, berbick, ruddock and Thomas (holmes was of course elite but so heavily postprime as to not be fully relevant to the question).

 

Spinks. Undefeated lineal HW champ, ATG LHW, 2 wins (should be only one) over ATG Holmes. Destroyed in 91 seconds.

 

Having just watched him vs Pinklon Thomas again, it may be him. Less elbows than I remembered it, but I think there were still a few landed elbows in the 1st. It needs a better resolution and/or different angles. Spinks was nowhere as formidable as Thomas or Smith were. In retrospective, but only in retrospective, Holmes was a better win than Spinks. It might had been Tucker, if not for the combination of Tucker coming in with an injured hand, and Tyson still failing to seem convincing against him. ____________ Ruddock failed to stop a dead Mike weaver and had to settle for a SD against him. Ruddock's 1st loss to Tyson was a good stoppage. There was no need for a rematch. Ruddock was right up there with Brian Nielsen, he hit harder (not by the margin most think he did) , but had a weaker chin. Nielsen was stopped on his feet by Dicky Ryan, Ruddock was stopped by David Jaco. The Mike Weaver Ruddock won a SD15 against was right on par with Nielsen's opponents. The James Smith Ruddock KOd was almost in as bad shape as Nielsen's opponents were. And Jeremy Williams was actually in good shape, but was still outgunned. 2nd best win may actually be Tony Tubbs.

 

Hard to pick just one, but today, today I'll go with undefeated Tyrell Biggs.

 

I would have to agree with Sangria and say that his total domination and breaking down of Tyrell Biggs was one his most overlooked best performances. In hindsight maybe Biggs was never as good as some people thought he might turn out to be but he was unbeaten at the time and there were some at the time who thought he had to the style to, if not beat Tyson,then at least give him a very competitive fight.

Tyson who was not that impressive in his previous fight against Tony Tucker, came in to the Biggs fight, looking like a man with a point to prove. Looked in better shape, lighter and somehow looked even meaner, being totally clean shaven. Biggs looked good in the first round, moving and jabbing but Tyson equally shown good defensive moves. After that Tyson just took over and gradually broke down Biggs with his unique combination of relentless speed, power and pressure. Tyson himself admitted that he was carrying Biggs and could have stopped him anytime from around the 3rd round on but wanted to punish Biggs until he decided it was time to finish the fight.

I think that the beating that Tyson give Biggs totally ruined him and he was never the same again after that fight but for Tyson,it was a opportunity to really showcase all his skills and total control of a fight and personally I think it was one of his best and most impressive performances.

 

The true heavyweight(200+) fighter who was closest to his best that Tyson beat was Tony Tucker. A good win. The most sensational win was his 90 second blitzing of Michael Spinks and the biggest name win was against Holmes(KO4).

 

Spinks, Tucker, and Thomas all great shouts. Berbick win was definitive, he fell down three times from one shot. 2000 vs Botha needs an honorable mention. Mike was looking shot then boom. Were people giving truth williams a shot with that jab or no? Because that is a very underrated performance by Mike. You can argue Holmes as well so many great ones.

 

Too many to pick from. Berbick, Thomas, Tucker, Biggs, Holmes, Tubbs, Spinks...that whole run was one of the better ones in the division's history.

 

And he fought him twice.

Who fights a dangerous prime contender twice, in back to back fights?

And if you listen to the post fight commentary in Dokes-Ruddock, they were talking about how Tyson had been ducking Ruddock for years

 

Because he was petrified to face the destroyer Foreman? Better to rematch somebody you've already beat I suppose... :rofl

 

Oh yes of course, fight 40 year old Foreman instead who up until that point had done SWEET **** ALL. rather than face a good, young hungry contender in his prime

Pity your hero didn't have the balls to face him and would have rather seen his Daddy Don King share the ring with him, very Mighty of Mike that... See what I did there??
