How did thomas win those rounds? All I saw Thomas throw the jabs, Tyson slipping and then Thomas holding him in a clinch and Tyson hitting Thomas with body punches. If an opponent successfully clinches Tyson then bone crusher should have been declared the winner in their bout. The judges scored correctly Tyson won all those rounds barring the fifth round.

If Tyson had been in peak physical condition then douglas would have been on the wrong side of history.

Tyson only started getting hurt by jabs by strong tall fighters like douglas and Lewis when his head movement went to the drain.

 

I can't disagree with that. At the time my perception of Spinks may have been inflated by giving more credit for beating Holmes then he deserved which was arguably aided bytime and questionable judging. or perhaps Spinks really was that good but the Tyson that he faced really that dominant and he was justifiably scared. Tysons subsequent belt with homes does little to clarify. Holmes had been inactive, was even longer in the tooth and wasn out of shape.

 

I have seen most of Spinks fights. I still cannot figure out what was so special about him. I was not surprised to see Tyson destroy him. The only person who competes with Tyson is someone with an awesome chin.

 

So how was Spink's chin perceived to be prior to the Tyson fight?

They wanted to get Tyson mad, and it worked in a spectacular fashion. But the outcome was not the expected: instead of losing focus, Tyson made his mission in life to destroy Spinks.

Rumour is that Tyson told the referee just before the fight began: "you know I am going to hurt this guy" .... and he sure did :yep

BTW, I just watched the fight again and sure men's fashion was bizarre back then .... wtf was the deal with using a tuxedo and no shirt?

 

On what basis was Spinks considered a favorite over Tyson? How was he even a threat to Tyson? I have seen his fights with Holmes, yes he has a very awkward style and tired his opponents out, confused them with his unorthodox style but he never showed any proof of being able to take a serious punch.

i think Spinks and Holmes are his career defining wins and then he has lots of very good wins over Bruno, Ruddock, Tucker, Golota, Botha etc.

Remember, Lennox Lewis gets credit for beating these very same guys.

flip, the script, Riddick Bowe has an amazing win over Holyfield, but outside of that his resume is pretty crap.

if we look back in history most ATGs are measured on their whole body of work as opposed to one defining win. Ali, obviously being the exception.

Holyfields career defining win is over Tyson himself

i think Tysons pre prison career was pretty solid, all that was missing was that win over Evander Holyfield.

Remember Holyfield always mentioned that Tyson was his biggest rival

 

There quite a few who thought Spinks would win: Bert Sugar, Don Dunphy, Teddy Atlas. Dave Anderson and Rocky Graziano picked Spinks to win by KO!

 

Nothing against Tyson, but Spinks had no chance. Doesn't matter who was picking him. He was an over rated LH who was of no threat to Tyson at all.

Ring magazine, had him as the legitimate champ, Ali and futch picked him to win.

there was a documentary i posted a while back from the 80s which claimed it was a genuine fight and Spinks was no mug.
