Ruddock was a decent fighter but very overrated on here and didn't relly beat anyone of note. Berbick amd Thomas were better and more proven fighters than Ruddock.
Larry Holmes followed by Michael Spinks were his best wins. I don't think any h/w in history would have beaten the version of Tyson that destroyed Larry. Trevor Berbick & Pinklon Thomas are good shouts for Tyson's alphabet unification run. He also did a good job on Tyrell Biggs who was an undefeated Olympic gold medalist at the time. Tyson had peaked & was on the way down when he fought Ruddock & Holyfield. If it didn't happen in the 1980's, it wasn't prime Tyson.
I know he's the best name on Tyson's resume by a distance but I'm not sure quite how good the Holmes win really is? Holmes is an ATG but he was nearly 40 and had been retired a couple of years I think? He used to have an aura about him, a little like that which clung around Tyson but by '88 I think that had long gone.
Absolutely Larry was over hill at 38 although he did go on to put together a decent run after that. Tyson was razor sharp that night though. I'd take that version of Tyson over any other h/w I've seen. I think Tyson did a more convincing job on 38-year old Larry than what Anthony Joshua did on 41-year old Wlad. This content is protected
Tyson was improving all the time until Rooney left, his peak was against Spinks, Tyson had an answer for evey defensive move Spinks made, Mike`s other most impressive win was v Tucker who was his best opponent during the Rooney years and had a great chin also, Tyson had to outscore him and he was 6'5. You are right. Both took some brutal flush shots to the head and body and kept going for the full 12 rounds. Ruddock looked like a road accident victim at the end. I think that fight took a lot out of both of them especially Ruddock who seemingly was never the same again after that punishing fight.
