I'm not saying Marvis is ATG HW. Considering he was supposed to be a 200lbs fighter (modern CW), should he be blamed for not beating the great HW? Considering he was supposed to be a modern day CW, should he be blamed for not beating 1983 Holmes and 1986 Tyson? Should he be blamed for not beating the H2H beasts? https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/h2h-heavyweights-mount-rushmore.717538/
Not even in hindsight, it was foreseeable at the time. As much as he was vastly superior to his son as a fighter, Dad was expertly & cautiously managed & manoeuvred in his own career by Yancey Durham. But like a rich kid who unthinkingly assumes money just flows without a second thought as to how, Dad apparently didn’t notice how his own career was finely & carefully controlled to maximum effect.
It's standard practice for marketable heavyweights to be carefully guided and then thrown into a couple big money fights. I actually don't think Marvis was very protected if you look at the big punchers he fought before Tyson.
Marvis would have been better served if he remained a mover and his dad didn't push George Benton his amateur trainer out of the picture
On paper it didn't look that impressive, Frazier had been stopped early before. To see it, though! Mike was just plain ferocious. The world was more used to having a more cerebral champion in Holmes, so Mike's insane viciousness was quite the spectacle to behold.
Tyson said it was 'His time to shine'. He was never gonna mess around and let Marvis get in to even the second round, he was on fire for this one.
Tyson's culmination of first round knockouts is what was impressive, Marvis was just another one that bit the dynamite, similar to how Joe blew through Foster it was a good performance but not career defining
