While going through this thread i cant help but think that had Tyson not went to jail imagine the career-defining fights that probably gone ahead- Tyson-Bowe or Tyson vs Holyfield in 91 would have been such a great contest, at a time where despite showing early flaws, Tyson wasn't the shell he was in 1995.... that said, I think his career defining fight has to be either slinks or berbick....:deal

I agree, Prison robbed him of his best years, not necessarily his prime. But 92-95 were where he could have had his career enhancing fights. Morrison, Moorer, Mercer, Holyfield, Bowe, Foreman. Not saying he would have beat them all, but he had the tools to. Then when 1996 came he would have been finished anyway.

If he hadn't gone to prison in 1992 I can't see him getting past Holyfield, to be honest.

And IF he gets past Holyfield it would be another tough war, where he looks very vulnerable, he wouldn't last long after that. If not Holyfield, then Bowe would probably be the man to beat him.

That still would have looked better than what did achieve in the end.

Losing one winning one against Bowe and Holy , and beating some of the second tiers like Moorer, Morrison, Mercer, Tua, Briggs, Mcall would have bettered his resume
Much better than Bruno, Seldon, Golota, Botha and Savarese

Very very True had the fight went a few rounds and had Spinks maybe pushed Mike a bit it would be looked at as a Great win, I still see it as a Great win!! Actually being old enough to have watched Spinks throughout the vast majority of his career he was a formidable opponent.. Let us not forget he did beat Holmes twice (though the 2nd fight was razor thin) and completely dominated Cooney and Tangsted and had not LOST A FIGHT!! Mike for some reason gets praised for all his early knockouts but at the same time it makes people say things like well if you could take him to deep water he would drown......

Thats the thing, a lot of the guys who have frequent life/death struggles tend to be given more praise rather than the "destroyer" types who knock people out early.

Totally!! Ali who sits atop almost everyone's #1 heavyweight of all time list (though Joe Louis sits atop mine) had many many tough fights!!! Can you even imagine what people would of said had Tyson been floored by a fighter Like Henry Cooper? Or if Tyson would have lost the Spinks fight which is similar to Ali losing to Frazier, and no I am not comparing Spinks to Frazier so everyone stay calm, I'm just saying 2 undefeated champions... I have an even better one, think if Tyson would have struggled the way Ali did with an opponent like Chuck Wepner!!! He would have been crucified!!!

I know what your saying, But Ali did fight tougher opposition than Tyson. However Tyson was only ever behind on the scorecards in only 4 fights. Douglas, Holyfield and Lewis and Botha.

Holyfield had struggles with Bowe, Moorer, Mercer and Cooper, this makes him a warrior.
If Tyson kncoked out the above, they would be reffered to as bums.

he was at his pinnacle with Spinks and went downhill from there...The outside influence and the inside influence stunted the growth he needed to get to the next level. He had potential but lets face it he failed

I agree I am a huge Holyfield fan but I totally know what you mean..

And Tyson would have wasted Moorer quick and early, I would have liked to seen Tyson-Mercer that might have been a fun scrap, Prime Mercer had granite in his chin!! Plus heavy hands, though I still see Tyson winning would have liked to see it..

I would argue he had a better championship run than Johnson, Dempsey, Marciano and Liston.

Tyson-Moorer would have been a replica of Tua-Moorer.

...... maybe prime Moorer was a little bit better than that ?
Sure, he could have gone the same way as Spinks .... or he might have done better like Ribalta or Bruno.
